I'm considering 4.10 or 4.30 for my v6 auto PreRunner. Currently running 33 skinnies only 50lbs each. Love the Toyo AT3. But I kind of want to leave the option to go back down to 32s in the future. If I did that, would 4.30 be too low? Looking for a happy medium here. Reason for this is I want the truetrac and figured I should just regear now. Definitely don't plan to go up to 35s in the future. Light off-roader, I drive the truck occasionally to work but I have a Toyota matrix for daily driving. We use the truck mainly for long camping trips and off-road fun

4.1 or 4.3 is a good gear set for what you're wanting. 4.56 wouldn't be bad either since you're not using the truck much.

I’m in the same boat when it comes to selecting gear sets. 2015 DCLB auto on 265/70/17 F/R bumper, sliders, some skids, camper shell etc. I don’t “think” ill ever go to a 35” would like to stay with a 285/75/17 (34) because of the C load options, and ease of fitment. Those tires are about #59. I know I’m right on the edge between 4.56 and 4.88, which makes the decision tough. I know with 4.56 I’ll be happier on the highway (I’m in TX it’s relatively flat and faster cruising speeds +75). However, 4.88 will more than likely future proof the itch of 35s and additional gear/weight. My big concern is being too high rpm wise for extended time on longer trips with the 4.88 and 34s. From what I understand there should be about a 200rpm difference between 4.56/4.88. Considering I’m a sport I’ll be doing locker(s) too. Looking at Truetrac for the rear and arb front….or dual arbs.

Any help or suggestions is greatly appreciated.

Trutrac in rear and speedmaster/nitro torsen in front, or dual lockers. I had 456 on 33" tires and was fine. When I went to 35's, it was more like stock gearing, so upsized to 488. Now I think 529 may be in the future. I think personally 488 may be better for you, Texas is flat in some spots, but not where I'm at.

agree with @Texoma above that 488s should be good. I have 315/75/16s with bumper, sliders, skids, shell, winch and the gearing is great with 488s. I would guess 456 would be a very small difference from 488. However, at that tire size 265/70/17 you probably are on the high end and may be higher than what you want -- but maybe this is the push that gets you to the bigger tires haha. Granted, I'm not driving 75 all that often but the gearing feels great. If I were on 33s I'd want to keep this setup.

I have no plans to stay 265/70/17s or if I did it would be a few weeks just waiting on gears/time to install. I think I’d like to stay at that 34” tire size (33.8). I know everyone says 4.56 for 33 and 4.88 for 35s+ And i think I’ll be right in the middle. I just want to do it right the first time. I have some time to think about it and weigh the options.

That's probably the most weight youll add... Already on your truck. 4.56 should be fine. I fell into a 4.10 truetrac for my V6 auto with skinny, "light" 33s and it's a little better than stock. Although I don't have all the weight you have (no armor, run softopper) so I'm happy and getting 15/16mpg. You'd be good with 4.56 I think.

If you ever plan on going 35s do 4.88 no point in re gearing again a 2nd time but if you're happy with that tire size. I'd say 4.56. I'm running a 285/75R17 tire which is right under 34" and I feel like 4.56 is perfect. Although in 4th gear at 65 mph I'm already close to 3k rpms I don't tow so it really doesn't affect me. Cruising at 75 mph in overdrive (5th) I'm doing right about 2500 rpms.

4.88s all day. Not enough difference between the two to make a difference. Had 4.88s on 34s and 35s now and cant tell a difference. I wish 4.56s werent even made so people didnt have to spend so much time worrying about it.

if you’re going 33” why not slap in some 4.10’s real quick
You can buy them for like $200-300

I’d rather just do the install once, and I know 4.10s wouldn’t make me happy either. Buy once cry once.
