What RPM are you at in 4 when cruising at 65?

Going with the Grimm Jeeper calculator for now, as I'm not sure off the top of my head...

    RPMs @ 65 mph
    Stock
    4th - 2661
    5th - 1916

    Me now
    4th - 3147
    5th - 2266

    You now (3.73 with 285/75r16)
    4th - 2481
    5th - 1787

You with 4.30 (more expensive as requires a different carrier in an OR model)
    4th - 2861
    5th - 2060

    You with 4.56
    4th - 3034
    5th - 2184

4.10 would get you even closer to stock gearing, but with the wider/heavier tires you'd want to get a little more gearing to make up for it. And that's like the smallest jump you can make, in my opinion not worth the time/effort/money. 4.30 you'd see some benefit as well, but not as simple for an OR model. 4.56 would really bring back some kick to your truck, and wouldn't need to run Premium like you do with the S/C.

I liked the planned RPMs calculated for me with the 4.56. It split the diff between 4th and 5th RPMs in a stock truck. I'm running heavy, and tow a lot.

Agree with both points above. Torque converter unlock is where most of the heat comes from.

At the end of the day its your choice OP @stickyTaco , clearly. But most folks here are telling you to re-gear first :D

I will be regearing, just want to run the blower first to get a better feel for where I need to be for the gear swap. I still think 4.56 is going to be lower than I want to be.

I'm excited to pick it up. It went into a container AUS back in June and was supposed to be here in August but shipping/ports are a mess right now. The container is currently stuck in Colombia (been there since August) but it is supposed to go on a ship heading to Houston this weekend with arrival the 2nd week of October (assuming it makes it on the ship...the last ship it was suppose to go on arrived last week and I didn't find out it wasn't on the ship until it arrived in Houston).

Had I known it was going to be this delayed I wouldn't have sold our old trailer last spring. The Patriot is 2,000lbs lighter than the old trailer, a lot smaller, and built for off road travel, so it'll be much better for disbursed camping on BLM of NFS land. We were pretty much stuck in developed campgrounds with the old trailer so we ended up only using it a couple weeks a year for big family trips and spent the rest of the time just camping out of the truck/RTT.

Bummer on the camper delays! Shipping/logistics is NUTS right now.

We're going the opposite direction you are. We did the AT Habitat for a few years, so I was setup great for getting off the beaten path, but really I found I didn't need that much of an offroad camping setup. That's why we just picked up the camper. Having hard walls up here in the PNW is gonna be great, and just more creature comforts. Was a pain to dry out the tent when there is 5 months straight of rain, too, lol. More often our camping is on the sand dunes, or down your average forest service road. Nothing this thing shouldn't be able to handle.

    Happy camping, bud!!

How do you like the 4.56 and S/C combo?

Since this thread got bumped I'll update. The blower has been on the truck for about 20,000 miles with nearly half of that towing my off-road trailer and nearly 1,000 miles in 4low if I had to guess. Still on the factory 3.73 gearing and a regear has moved down my list on things to do.

When I do regear, I'm definitely not going 4.56. The supercharger more than makes up for tire size in terms of drivability and I'll likely go 4.30 if anything. I changed the transmission fluid when the supercharger was installed and plan to pull a sample in the spring when I'm close to 25,000 miles since the last fluid change and ship it off to blackstone for analysis.

Transmission temps still track close to the coolant temp and even on 33s with all the extra weight the truck is quicker than it was when new.

I can answer about that particular combo. 2014 DCSB hovering around 6900-7000lbs loaded for camping (yes, both the truck and I need to lose weight) with the steel bumper, drifter on the bed, and 35" MTs for about 40k miles now. Its a heavy brick rolling down the road.

The 4.56 definitely makes it easier to get the truck moving and feeling 'more like stock' on the road. Don't get me wrong, the truck is heavy and you can feel it but the the re-gear was pretty night and day. Before the regear, it always felt sluggish getting up to speed and definitely took a long longer to get up to / maintain speed going up a grade or on a freeway onramp. After the rear gear, it definitely has more pep in its step and can get moving a lot quicker. Feel more confident getting up to speed onto the freeway with shorter onramps.

The S/C has been on the truck for 120k miles now and with the regear, it definitely helps a lot getting up to speed. One con with the 4.56 is I'm definitely sitting at a much higher rpm going up a grade at 70-80mph but with the s/c the truck does not struggle. it just gets loud and gulps premium fuel but it can take off and gain speed.

If I were deciding if I wanted to regear and or s/c with the same truck setup .. I'd probably re-gear and skip the s/c. The s/c was nice and I got it since I was able to bake it into the financing when I bought the truck from toyota new but, at least for me, it wouldn't be worth the price (~$5.2k in 2014 installed by Toyota). It definitely is nice getting that extra burst of power when you get on the gas but I think re-gearing would be the better bang for your buck. I do have to say I do drive fast on the freeway sometimes but a lot of the time I just sit in the #2 or #3 lane doing 70-75 and rarely overtake cars so I don't get much use out of the s/c with my driving style. Its nice to have but definitely costs more at the pump having to use premium fuel especially being in CA for me.

Any insights on how your mpg compares pre and post supercharger?

Minimal change. I only get 11-12mpg when towing (unchanged from pre-supercharger) and about 15mpg around town which is about 1mpg lower than before. This is running long tube headers and a 2.8 pulley, FWIW.

Thanks for the info. Bit of a bummer the mpg went down but at least it wasn't by much. I guess the bigger hit is the need for premium fuel.

I thought 4.30 required a different carrier in the OR axles? Makes the change a bit more expensive, but still possible of course. At the time, this is one of the reasons I went to 4.56 instead of 4.30.

Some of that decline is likely do the fun noises it makes when building boost.
    :burnrubber:

@YF_Ryan, not sure on the issues with 4.30 but it would be worth it to pay the difference over 4.56 or to go with 4.10s since I'm in 4 when towing and would prefer to keep highway rpm's lower.

I’m so stuck between regear or supercharger.
Right now, have the opportunity to purchase the supercharger, won’t install till around the spring anyways, most likely will be adding the URD headers as well and complete the full bolts ons on my truck. Then I get thinking about cost of install, plus the HP TUNER and tuning costs. I just don’t want to be disappointed right.

It’s safe to say the regear will probably be half the costs of the supercharger and give me back some of that pep back into the truck. I was even thinking of doing regearing, URD headers and with all the bolt ons complete, get it tuned as well.
