Auto. My understanding is 3.73 (I think) but not sure if previous owner regeared or not.

    Good luck bro
I’d say regear first so you’re not driving a fuckin dog and stressing your transmission. Not as fun as big tires but prob the sensible decision.
Nowadays I see members saying 5.29 are the only way to go for regearing tacoma and i dont know why but might want to consider 5.29

I guess my point is, it will drive the same with the “new” tire size so if it’s good to you as is, get new wheels/tires and regear later if you feel the need.

I don't know anything about tranny problems. I tow with mine as well, but I probably baby it on road. I also do all the service work when due. Guess I am not worried about tranny problems. The gears I am running are short term anyway, and sounds as if yours are too. That said, everything I have read, and, at this point have experienced leads me to believe you will be fine without the regear first. But... I also would do your own due diligence and make your own conclusion that you can afford and live with. I have made my bed and so far so good.

Do the fender liners... Trust me.

That’s fair. Honestly it feels fine to me but I have nothing to compare it to, I just wanted longevity out of everything as well and less strain on the transmission.

Personally, I would be more concerned with the steering rack and CVs than the transmission with the much bigger than stock tires.

An auto locks up. It can slip. It can crawl forward.
A manual is on/off clutch engagement. And has different ratios.

    This matters.

I have 4.88 manual 35" and it's either right on the money or potentially just a little bit overgeared to where it may have been a trade-off,
of better performance 4.88 (or so they say)
or better highway 4.56 which is majority of driving.

I say "or so they say" because 1. the internet is known for dumb words
and 2. you do not off road better by taking a crap vehicle and overgearing the shit out of it to compensate.
You buy, or install, a proper 4x4 drivetrain that gives you a better crawl ratio. Many other things play a role in that beyond final drive, such as tcase(s).

Is stock 35's wise? Probably not.
    4.10? IDK. That's a small jump. Maybe.
4.30? That's an FJ gear. Hard to find.
    maybe 4.56 or 4.88.
You'd have to run your specs through the calculator to figure out RPM and speed.
Nobody's trying to redline cruise 65.

Location of the truck (speed of traffic differs)
if you want to handle altitude, towing, how much added weight the truck has what kind of build it is

This is a large platform. Find someone with the mods you're thinking about, to drive or ride in their truck and see how it is.

    People also take into account
    -gear strength
-future parts compatibility such as ECGS rear axle
-future tire size such as if considering 37"

Not to mention transmission. Mine is stock, therefore it is RA60F. Which is supposedly shit compared to RA61F and RC62F.

You can also try what some people have, and that is doing "power adders" first to see if that makes a difference. It is cheaper and easier to do.
Things like tune, IM spacer, etc.

Dang. Been over a few months since I wheeled on aired down 35's, stock rack, stock CV's, stock trans. Might need to be more concerned go in there rub some aloe vera on them.

Ha, you misinterpret my words. Others mentioned they would be worried about the transmission with 35s and stock gearing, I was saying I would be more worried about the rack or CVs with 35s than I would be the tranny. I’m sure as long as it isn’t abused it’s all fine.

But hey, go ahead a rub some aloe on your stuff, certainly won’t hurt.

I've got 35s with stock gears and an automatic transmission (w/ trans cooler). I do take it offroad but normally nothing crazy unless I'm trying to get to a good camping spot or need to rescue a broken down dirt bike. Stock gears are totally fine, I don't think I'll ever re-gear. Sometimes I have to put the transmission in the "4" position so it doesn't shift to 5th gear but I actually use 5th a lot, just can't go up a hill in 5th on the interstate.

An easy way to tell if your truck has been re-geared is your speedometer - is it off? Is it off by the exact percentage your tires are bigger than stock? If so, you probably have stock gears.

I noticed you don't have fender liners... Did you reroute your intake? If not you're kicking a lot of mud, water, snow, etc. right into your intake which is not good. Intake is on the passenger side but you also should put a fender liner in your driver side fender because that's where your cabin air is drawn from.

How can I calculate the difference in my speedometer by the size of my original tires and my current ones? I’m no good at math lol and there’s no fender liners but there’s not like direct access to my intake and engine bay so it doesn’t get too bad.

Edit: I used that fancy tire calculator we have here on Tacoma world and yes according to that I have stock gearing. Thanks for pointing that out. Did you upgrade your trans cooler, or did you have one to start? I have the OEM cooler but was looking at throwing a larger one on there.

Maybe the 2006 isn't the same as 2014 but my intake definitely goes into my fender. Take a flash light and look straight up into your fender, if you see a black tube you need to protect that.

I have a K&N intake and it’s completely blocked off aside from a pretty small circlular hole which from how it’s positioned, doesn’t allow a lot of junk to come up into the engine bay.

I have a stock geared 06 with 255/85/17 Mickey Thompsons. It’s fine. Sure I plan to regear. But it’s fine. You’ll be fine.
