Toyota gave the Tacoma 3 transmission modes which can be mixed & matched. Drive, ECT, S-Mode. Mix and match them. You don’t need regearing nor retuning.

You been given all the shift point remapping by the Toyota engineers.

Enjoy it. The Toyota engineers did a wonderful job of giving us control of how our Tacoma’s shift.

My 3rd Gen Tacoma is an utter torque beast in S-Mode 3rd & 4th with ECT PWR.

I blaze through town and up dirt caliche roads like a jackrabbit.

Hope this helps. S-Mode is a beast. Stick it in 3rd or 4th and leave it and gun it...

I totally agree with you here. The Toyota gods blessed this bad boy with all it needs from the factory. ECT opens things up a shocking amount by letting revs build a bit higher too!

Come on, Colorado.... Certainly you used S-Mode? It’s right there?! You ain’t noticed it? It’s in your truck. Hard not to notice it. You don’t play around with it? Do you know what it’s for? Most Tacoma owners haven’t a clue what it is.

Sorry, those have nothing to do with the problems in the engine tranny combo Toyota slapped into these trucks.

Gotta admit. I can’t quit looking at that Gif of the chick falling down with popcorn. Good one.

it that supposed to be me? lol

    Here are some truths:

OVTune is an attempt to make the 3rd Gen Tacoma shift sequential. 3rd Gens shift non sequential. The ECM will just learn the OVTune and be back to non sequential shifting.

Same with regearing. ECM will learn the new gear ratios and go back to non sequential shifting.

Toyota engineers gave us 3 transmission modes (D, S-Mode, ECT PWR).

Mix and match them. You can remap you shift points and torque any way you want.

Drive around town in S-Mode 3. Leave it there.

    Freaking high torque Jackrabbit.

I disagree. The V6 and transmission are solid and will last 100s of 1000s of miles. Rock solid. It’s a software parameter issue in the ECM.

For what's it's worth....the regear aspect mostly comes into play when much larger tires are added.

ETC Power only changes the shift points on the automatic transmission equipped vehicle (or holds the gears longer). This is desirable when towing or going through the mountains to grandmothers house.

The reasoning for tunes and gearing vary between owners. Most OEM tunes are designed with the best fuel economy/safety in mind. For a stock vehicle, this usually will suffice.
For the individual that would like to install a lift, armor, larger tires, maybe tow a small camper, RTT, slide in camper...depressing the ETC button is not a fix all and will never out perform changing the axle gearing to improve performance.

I do use ETC power a lot in my Lexus (and paddle shifters) when I want to have a spirited drive. However, someone may have missed this magical button that’s been on Toyota’s since the 90’s.
