In other words 5th and 6th gears are useless. Gotcha, thanks for confirming.

    I wholeheartedly disagree with OP.

ECT does nothing but increase throttle sensitivity and hold gears slightly longer. "S-mode" does nothing but tell the transmission not to shift past a certain gear.

Neither of those two things even come close to addressing the AWFUL throttle response and torque curve, not to mention the fact that upgrading to larger tires (33's or ESPECIALLY 35's) eats up the very little low end torque the truck had to begin with (Also takes away highway MPG, makes speedometer inaccurate, and puts additional strain on the transmission due to the gears being too tall.)

OVTune and regear make the 3rd gen Tacoma what it should have been from the factory. I wouldn't even consider it "wanting more", it's more like bringing it up to the standard that everyone knows it should have already been at from the beginning. You are giving the Tacoma engineers too much credit. They are under immense pressure to design the product in a way that gets better and better fuel economy and emission standards; in doing so, they know the end result is a vehicle that drives less than desirable just to meet strenuous government standards.

I love my Tacoma, but I stand with the thousands of others on here that agree that something as simple as a tune and regear make this truck what it SHOULD be.

Well, useless to you since you don’t own a 3rd gen, yes-confirmed...

I took a brand spanking 2020 on a 500 km test drive through mountain passes and flat highways, so I do have Experience behind the wheel. Still a very nice truck, don’t get me wrong. 4.88 gears would make it near perfect.

Seems to me people need to quit buying the Tacoma until Toyota puts on 33's or 35's tires, regear to 4.88or 5.29, purchases OVTune and makes it a standard featured. Then Tacoma owners would have the perfect truck..

I know a couple of 3g Tacoma owners that like their vehicles in stock form. They have no complaints with the engine/transmission. They do belong to the older (+65) age group and are not serious off roaders.

My opinion is be thankful you can mod your vehicle. Toyota and other manufactures will continue to try and improve fleet mpg. The days of low end torque out of a gas engine are gone.

What's trolling about that comment? I'm far from the only one to think the engine transmission comb isn't anywhere it should be. Put the software in it to act like one of the Lexus's that's it's out of, then yeah, it might get there. In this form, yeah, we all know....

both of your statements are incorrect.

OVTune has completely rewritten the factory shift logic. It will not go back to the stock shift logic

the ECU won’t learn the gears. The shifting algorithm accounts for many variables and it’ll adjust somewhat based on your driving style but it does nothing to account for the gears. The load / demand / etc will change which will alter the shift points but that’s just the ecu selecting different parameters in the tables.

Also what’s the point in having 5/6 gear to never use them?

anyone who thinks gear ratios don’t make a difference, should drive one of each. The MT drives completely different than the AT

There is nothing wrong with the engine (V6), transmission, combo. They are rock solid and will last a lifetime of abuse. We're fortunate to have such well engineered machinery. The problem is the Toyota software engineers and the ECM. 3rd Gens shift non sequential and are always looking for the lowest rpm. 100% software.

But like.. what about when you actually need to go off road. Not just off pavement, or down “clay” roads that must be maintained if you “blaze” through them. I’m talking about driving into wilderness where no path has been determined yet and you are forced to drive under 5mphs. I like the taco for its size but stock it sucks for actual off-road use.
