After having my truck for about 2,000 miles, I've decided it needs 4:88 gears bad! Anyone here changed gears on their tacomas that still had their factory powertrain warranty. Obviously everything downstream of the ring and pinion will no longer be covered, but has anyone that has been re geared gone in for engine, transmission, or transfer case work and been denied the factory warranty? I wouldn't bring up the gear change if I had to go in for warranty work, but I have a feeling a short test drive and the mechanics would know. It would have no negative effects on any upstream components, but would definitely be an aftermarket change that Toyota easily use to deny warranty claims.

The only way warranty claims might be denied is if it is proved beyond a doubt that your work or parts caused the failure.

Like if the differential fails and you twist the drive shaft off .

Unless the mechanic also drives a Tacoma everyday the chances of them knowing and caring are about zero.

I guess maybe the better question would be, has anyone who re geared been hassled by the dealer when taken in for warranty work.

Yeah, unless he outright tells them he changed the gears, an already overworked tech isn’t going to go out of his way to count revolutions of the driveshaft to check if the gear ratio is still stock when they have plenty of other stuff to do that they actually get paid for.

My guess is that most folks who re gear don't really fret the warranty.

We know when it's regeared, its obvious (visually even), and will deny related driveline complaints.

Isn't the power train warranty only good for three years?

It would probably take me five years to get a regear done, that's if I decided I wanted to regear today.

I’ve never heard of an account of a warranty repair being denied because of a re-gear, but you pretty much need to except that risk. If you have the spare money to regear, you probably have the money to repair your truck.

Yes it will affect your whole driveline warranty from engine to axle.
If there is an issue, and the dealer denys warranty, it is not up to them to prove anything. They deny and you then fight. They don't have to prove anything. It will then be settled in the courts.

So comments like this help no one. Just looking for actual people with re-geared trucks and power train related warranty issues. Right now I am at the regear or buy something different in a year decision making process. Can't really use fifth or 6th gear 90% of the time I drive my truck. They just geared the auto trucks to high for folks that live in the mountains.

I wasn’t trying to be snotty. I was just giving you my 2 cents. Although I haven’t regeared, I have replaced a large part of my suspension and tires.

    Two cases...
A friend of mine went through it and in the sticky threads above, there is a documented case that went through the MM Act from a trusted member.
You might win in the end but it will cost you more in legal fees.

Which is unfortunate. If you enter into an MMcase and win, the court should award you the legal fees. That's precisely why companies will allow these things to escalate to that point. They know the average person can't or won't spend the money on a lawyer.

My FIL went to arbitration on a Jeep Grand Cherokee he bought new. Total shitbox. He had it a year and a half and had nothing but trouble. He asked Chrysler to give him a fair trade on the vehicle based on all the BS he went thru and they wouldn't. The dealer actually supported his claims and backed him so he went to arbitration. It cost him one dollar. And when it was over, Chrysler had to stroke him a check for the full purchase price of the vehicle, plus sales tax, plus interest.
