    I have a 97 Tacoma with the 2.7L (4 Cylinder) and a 5 speed transmission.

Im putting 15x10 wheels with 33/12.50 tires on it and im just wanting to know what gear ratio to go with so the truck turns the 33's easier. Im not worried about gas mileage i just dont wont the truck to bog down going up hills and struggle with everyday driving.

If it's 4wd, don't forget you'll have to change both diffs.

I have the 3.4 V6 with a 5spd. I dropped in 4.88 gears with 285/75/16 tires. Setup is great all around. I lose a bit of top end Hwy performance cause I'm reving at 3000rpm when doing 70mph.

You have the 4 banger. I would definitely spring for 4.88s

I've got 4.56 and 33's and it's good everywhere but hills. I tend to baby it and usually never go past 3500 RPMs though so it is mostly my fault it doesn't climb well. On the freeway at 70 I'm around 2700 RPMs. That was with a tired 300,000 + old engine too.

4.88's if you do a bunch of dirt; 4.56's if you're generally on pavement

What gears do you have now? There's a code on your door sticker that tells you what you have.
    https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads/oem-gear-ratio-chart.365138/

There are some online gear conversion charts that can help you. https://www.4wheelparts.com/off-road/gear-ratio-tire-diameter.aspx

    There are many others, too.

Just try and match your RPMs at 65mph (current tires) with the new tire size and new gear ratios. 4:10s, 4:56s, 4:88's, or 5:29s

Or just go with 4:88's, lol...

Lol, I have stock gears with 33's and my speedometer is a bit slower if you get my drift..I don't want to lose precious top end power, I do however have to baby my trans and rearend. I have a V-6 so its a bit different than a 2.7 I would definitely regear if I had a 4 cyl.

Yes the front and rear have to match or you will burn your transfer case up.

    You clearly don't like acceleration...:D

    I wasn't going to regear....till I tried taking off from a stoplight with 33s......suddenly I had a couple thousand to spend:spending:

    A few.
V6 on 285/75 R16’s here, and just went from factory 4.10’s to 4.56’s this year. It’s my only vehicle and occasionally I have to drive across country which kept me away from 4.88’s. I’m incredibly happy with the improvement. My first trip to the Denver area I went over Vail pass at 10,662’ and only dropped to 3rd gear for less than two minutes. On the way home to Grand Junction I never dropped below 4th on Vail. (not as steep west bound) In over 24+ years of driving that pass in a handful of Toyota trucks I’ve never had that kind of performance. Gears may just be the best mod ever. If you spend most of your time on pavement then 4.56 or 4.88, if you do a fair amount of off highway driving (and have a second vehicle) go 4.88 or 5.29. More torque is never a bad thing, after all your in a 2.7 Tacoma you’re probably not going to set a land speed record. I almost wish I had gone 4.88 with mine, but not to the point of kicking myself.

Do you have a Ford rear cause I don't think you can get a Toyota in 5.11.

I have a 2.7 5 spd running 33x10.50s on stock 4.10s. For daily driving it's not bad at all, the place I want to gear down for is in the rocks. 4 low just ain't quite low enough with the 33's for crawling. If I could afford it I'd just do dual cases and leave the axle gears and be set for both on road and off.

What he said...I like my 4.56 but its still my dd and I use it to explore and that always involves pavement, if its just gonna be in the dirt and rocks...4.88 all the way... i had great experience with ecgs and the least expensive option I could find. If youre gonna open the front up, put a arb locker in there:thumbsup:

What do you do with the truck? Daily driver? Dedicated wheeler? Do you do lots of interstate driving? Is your truck heavy? What is your stock gear ratio?

This will be a big factor in picking your gears. I don’t think 4.56 will be enough. My 2.7 has stock 4.30s and it struggled while towing and crawling rocks.

4.88 would probably be a safe bet for the average user.

I’m running 5.29 on my truck and I love it. Wouldn’t want any less. Note, my truck is a trail/play rig. It’s is over geared if you were going to use it as a Hwy commuter. Sits at 3k at 65mph.

I would also note some of the input you are getting here is coming from people with the 3.4L engine. Your truck and theirs are not the same. We can’t make up for lack of gearing with power.

Give ECGS a call and they’ll help you sort through your options. Good luck!

The truck has stock 3:58 gears. I mainly do pavement driving because the truck is my daily driver but id like to start wheeling on weekends and be able to have fun offroad.

If you offroad, might as well lock it while you're in there. Especially the front. It's not exactly a few bolts and pull the diff like the rear.

That’s a really good one, as are all of his. I didn’t have nearly as much trouble getting the clamshell to come out as he did though.
