I'm thinking it could be the oil pan on a 3.4 in a 4runner that's giving him problems, but yeah it got me concerned about doing mine. I pulled my engine for other stuff and am going to do it all at once.

Maybe so. Don’t get me wrong, it was a little tricky, but no bad.

10" sub, OME881 on Bilstein's, 3" all-pro leaf springs with billies in the back, JBA UCA's, bed cover with custom LED lighting, k&n intake and DT headers, OEM E-locker in the rear. 32" BFG KO2 on steel D window wheels, suicide knob. rebuilt 3RZ w/ stage 1 cam and balance shaft delete . big 3 mod, all new suspension and body mount bushings. cat back magnaflow exhaust.
As far as I was able to calculate from spinning the tires and counting drive shaft rotations I got 11 turns out of the drive shaft to 5 rotations of the tire. Maybe I did it wrong but the spedo was off by 20mph with 31's on it. And it was a stock Toyota taco axle.

Sounds like you have 4.56 gears. 20mph off seems really extreme too...

Well maybe it was 11 drive shaft rotation for 1 tire rotation. But that seems way off. Man it was about 9 years ago when I did it lol either way it was rediculous to drive. The speed governed kicked on at like 85mph on the speedo. When I put a new axle on with Elocker from a wrecked tacoma it brought the speedometer back to normal.

If you had 5.11 then the drive shaft would spin a little over 5 rotations per 1 wheel rotation. Mark the drive shaft at the diff and try again.

I thought I was pushing it when I stretch the RPM's to 3k, haha. I usually try to shift below that or at it...my 3.4l is screaming pretty loud by the time I hit 3k especially in gears 1 - 3. The extra weight on the truck isn't helping I'm sure.

edit: just realized you're 4cyl...I think those are meant to be revved higher so makes sense

Yeah I got rid of that axle long ago...shame though I had no place to store it and no one wanted it so I went to the scrap yard with whatever gears were in it. I should have pulled the 3rd member at least. Oh well. I was young and didn't know what I had was worth anything.

Curious though what I have now I'll have to go out and check that one out and see. I always thought it was 4:10 but who knows now, everything I knew was a lie lmao. What did rear ends with E lockers come with?

I think that 4.88's are good with 33's on a 2.7 if your keeping the motor mostly stock. Especially since you have some pretty wide tires...more drag/rolling resistance.
if you're going to add at power adder like a s/c or a turbo then go with 4.56.
The 3rz feels much more powerful over 3k rpms than under.
