I was coming out of a '17 Tundra and was choosing between a '15 SR5 w/ around 40K and a new '18 SR. Both V6, auto, 4x4. Having owned a '15 Tacoma before my Tundra I knew what the 4.0 & 5-speed auto were all about.

After putting nearly 20K miles on my '18 I can easily say the '15 was a better daily driver. Much less aggravating drivetrain. That being said, the gen3 does tow better...but I don't tow very often. Fuel economy between the 2 is very close. My '15 turned in a solid 20.5 mpg on pretty much every tank since new. The '18 seems to hover in the high 20.x range unless I put it on the highway for extended periods (which isn't often) and then it climbs to 24/25.

Opinions vary, but the gen2 was more satisfying for me.

I hear it's almost impossible to see the hood in a Ridgeline. You might want one of those.

I wish i kept my 2nd gen. Each has its pros and cons but taking all things into consideration I wish i kept my 2nd gen and the cash instead of moving up to a 3rd gen.

Well, it is barely broken-in being only 4 years old!

I've never owned a 2nd Gen, but when I bought my '17 (new), I bought it as the '18's were coming out, so I saved $4k. Something to think about....

I did like my 2012 but no regrets. My current 2019 ORDC has it's faults (as does virtually every vehicle on the planet) which I feel are offset by the many good things about the truck. I always yearn for the latest greatest. It's in my DNA.

What? Are you under 4'5? I came off of a second gen into a third and find the cabin virtually the same just updated beyond grey on grey and retro looking dash o_O

Haha we related. I'm supremely optimistic but all the rest. Told the wife "I love this little truck". She said "it's a damn good thing". Right!

I came from an 07 2nd Gen and am now in a 18’ 3rd Gen. Not really by choice, I was in an accident and my 07 was written off. I was originally looking for a another 2nd Gen but everything around me either priced crazy, or had a ton of mileage. So I ended up in a leftover 18’.

Biggest annoyance I find is the cab seems lower, or the windows are narrower or something. It seems like the rear view mirror is in the way even with shoved up all the way. I find myself ducking down to look across the passenger side, I’m 5’10”. Maybe my 07 was the same and I was just used to it.

I find this engine much peppier when you put the pedal down, I never found the 4.0 to be overly blessed with power. It is a different truck to drive just cruising along normally though. It shifts quite a bit and let’s the revs drop pretty low, I’m getting used to it now. ECT button makes it drive similar to the 4.0 I think. I also get about 100-150km more out of a tank then the 07.

I do love all the new tech stuff in this truck though, the cruise control and the radio/nav are great but it’s really still pretty basic in comparison with a lot of vehicles on the road now. As you know the 2nd gens were very basic, which isn’t bad at all. I loved mine for that reason.

Like mentioned above I would maybe hold out for the 2020’s, sounds like there going a few upgrades that are worth the wait.

I wish I was then maybe I could get one of those government checks every month. No I am 6ft. The a pillar is right in the way and it just seemed like stated above I was hunching down to look out. I even checked the angle between the two and the 2nd gen was 3 deg steeper.

Count me in the still drunk with excitement phase (about 700 miles so far in my '19 OR). I wouldn't mind having a prior gen, but there are a lot of upsides to moving up. I personally am a big fan of the tech, ESPECIALLY adaptive cruise control. Best damn thing they've come up with yet. And the auto brights. And the lane change monitors.

Not to mention heated seats, backup cam, collision monitor, reliable bluetooth, satellite and navi. (I run Waze on my phone but my last few vehicles have had navi, and it's to the point I find it hard to get in a car that doesn't have it.) FWIW visibility is absolutely not an issue as far as I'm concerned.

I have the manual, and I think it is an awesome transmission. Very smooth shifting. Lots of power within reason. (I haven't started towing my 2800# camper yet, but looking forward to it. I hope it won't change my mind about the power...)

The only thing I'm not enamoured of truth to tell is the gas mileage. Mine currently is about 18, barely broken in, with mixed city/highway driving. And I don't drive like a maniac. I realize the compromise between performance and MPG, but I think they could do better in this day and age. The future is probably a turbo or a hybrid or partial electric.

Not sure if this makes the case for you, but there it is. Given the choice between a low-mileage 2G at a great price and a new 3G I'd still probably pull the trigger for the 3G.

I still miss my 2nd gen that was totalled last November but the 3rd gen is indeed a better ride overall. I find the blind spots less cumbersome in the 3rd gen.

I had a 2013 that I traded in on a 2016. At the end of the day they both had there ups and downs. I think the 3.5L is definitely more peppy but the power is higher up in the rpms. The 4.0 had good grunt off the line but that's it. If I could have the low end of the 4.0 and the peppyness of the 3.5 together would be amazing. That and I like the interior of the 3rd gen better but i like the exterior of the 2nd gen better. I feel the quality of the 3rd gen went up inside the cabin. At the end of the day l loved them both. I forgot to add that with both fuel tanks being equal size on both gens I averaged about 80 to 100 miles more per tank on the 3rd gen then the 2nd.

Your truck is practically brand new! It will more than likely give you many more years of solid service. What's the point of getting a new one? Drive your 15' into the ground & get whatever new gen of Tacoma is available by then...

Best advice yet, this was my plan with my 07 before the accident. I do like my 18’ though.

18 is not bad for a MT, especially since you're still in the break in stage.
