I'm just curious how using regular engine oil (5W30) compares to assembly lube when reassembling cylinder heads. Do you have preference for one over the other and why?

Also, on what parts of the camshaft should I be applying cam lube ? That's the grease-like substance. Does that go on cam lobes only?

assembly lube wont hurt especially if you arent going to start for a while. just change the oil after it runs for a bit. 50/50 oil and lucas oil stabilizer works too.

when i worked at the dealer, i put it on everything. buckets, lobes, rockers, everything. biggest thing with assg lube, is it stays where you put it for initial startup.

Plain engine oil is too thin.

Coat all cam bearing surfaces and lobes with a thick assembly lubricant. Bearing surfaces are more important than the lobes. Many moons ago we used straight STP Oil treatment ( consistency of honey ) for engine assembly lube. It also worked great.
