The book says 87 and we have 86 in New Mexico and seems fine. Every so often I'll put in 88 to bring it up a bit, but not necessary. I use the CO 85 when I'm up there and seems fine.

You could put in 87 like the owners manual says (what Toyota engineers say to use). I suggest you add a few gold coins to the tank if you want to feel better about it. At least you could take those out if you need money later.

Just run what you like in your truck... so many debates on this topic on here but the reality is that everyone's truck is somewhat different. Some report gains in performance or MPGs while some say there is no difference. For me, I could tell an increase in MPGs with premium of ~2mpgs (calculated manually over 4 full tanks..) but also reduced chirping of the fuel pump and less stuttering on slow acceleration. ultimately I've stuck with BP 89 as my go-to as it mostly gets rid of the chirping and reduces the stuttering (while still present) enough not to bother me and is only about .20 more per gallon vs. the nearly .80-.90 extra per gallon for 93 in my area.

If I put 87 in, vibes (exhaust?) are much more annoying and the squealing chirp that's embarrassing returns. Those are my facts.

And for what it's worth, when I had a day to do some ride-along with a field service tech to address some of my issues he even was clear with me that all of Toyota's new vehicles are designed to "run better" on premium but will also run fine on regular b/c they have to - else people wouldn't buy them.

I am sure the internet engineers who post around here will assure the rest of you that I am wrong, but my facts are that I drive the same road every day to and from work. If I run 87 octane my truck consistently stutters while cruising under light load in top gear at 50 mph in certain places. If I run 91+ it doesn't do it at all. I hate it because I am a cheap sumbitch but I can't stand the stutter feeling.

Get my gas at Costco so I've been filling up with 91 but got my first tank of the cheap stuff last time. Seems fine so far but I will probably go back to 91. It's about a $4 difference per tank and only fill up 2 times a month if that.

Thanks for that. I actually called Toyota and they said if 87 is not available, use 88. I don't know what the put in it in Tucson when I bought it. I refilled in Las Cruces with 86 and did not notice a difference. I have been running 87 from Sam's and 88 when not available and have noticed no difference

The only improvement you'll see is if you run ethanol free premium.

I drive from Illinois to Arizona at least one once a year. Some areas offer 85 or 86 for the advertised price. Don’t run that. Use the 88 octane or your fuel mileage will drop and drivability will suffer. Otherwise 87 is good. 87 minimum means don’t run anything lower than 87.

Top tier BP shell or Costco gas. Usually 87 most of time but I have noticed better throttle response with 93. Not enough to justify the price increase.

91 shell ethanol free here. If we had 87 ethanol free, i would most likely use that.

I drive work van during weekdays, so my taco sits for 4-5 days, thats the reasoning for ethanol free gas.

Jealous of that ethanol free. Do you live near water? We can get it near a marina but it's like 6 bucks a gal

Well i live in vancouver BC, so it is close to water i guess. All Shells that ive been at around here offer 5% ethanol 89 and 91 no ethanol, quite nice.

It is 1.65 per liter though, but i dont really care, i drive work van during the week.

Regular unleaded for me, it's rated at 85 octane in Colorado. I've been told it's the same as 87 regular but octane rating is lower because of Colorado's high elevation. Been doing it since I moved here in 1990 and no problems to my vehicles. I see no reason to pay 40+ cents a gallon for super.

There is none, unless you want higher because it happens to be ethanol free and that's what you want, or stated by manufacturer.
