Using 91 Costco top tier noticeably better performance than the 87 (up to 10% ethanol I think). It’s just better I wondered if it was the ethanol or winter additives in the 87 that was making the difference.

I run 89 in my truck, I noticed that it runs smoother. Not better, but less engine ticking and smoother power

I'm happy with the performance on regular but if someone wants to run 91 or 93, that's their choice. However my snowmobiles always get the 91.

Partly agree. Some gas stations offer better cleaning additives with 91 or higher.

I run 87 ethanol free 95% of the time but go with 90+ if it’s not available. Truck runs great, but my intent (hope) is mostly to reduce nasty build ups inside the engine for longevity.

this video has some good info, but as with anything on the internet; take with a grain of salt.

I only fill up with 93 about 3 or 4 times a year. I consider it a fuel injection treatment instead of using some kind of snake oil. The rest of the time I use 87.
If I know I'm going to be burning up fuel on long hauls I use 87. I always fill up at the same gas station or the same gas station chain unless I'm on a trip somewhere.
I try to refill when the truck is at half a tank. If you get bad gas its better to only have half a tank of shitty gas than a whole tank of shitty gas.

I typically find vehicles get better mpg's when there is no ethanol in the fuel, which means going 91 more often than not. depending where you live you can always research which companies do and don't mix ethanol in and try to use them as often as possible and still run the 87 octane. in my area to go premium/91 octane it is at least 20 cents more per litre, or 70 cents more per gallon..

These actually work for testing fuel for ethanol. I have a boat mechanic friend that gave me one. You fill it with water, then add fuel and shake it up. The glass has lines to determine the ethanol content. Ethanol actually burns cooler than gasoline, but it does not have the "shelf life" gasoline has. I agree that 100% gas gives better mpgs.

    Totally uneducated question coming up...

Does octane level make ANY difference in a fuel injected engine?

I read that 91 octane can withstand higher heat and pressure than 87, which keeps it from trying to ignite in a high compression engine outside of the compression chamber. My 65 has a carburetor and a 350 HO with 9:1 compression. If I put 87 in it and the engine is hot it'll diesel when I shut it off. Runs like crap. 91 octane clears this up.

But our Toyotas are all 11:1, so using this logic you need 91. But I've never had ANY issues with 87.

Does this have anything to do with the fuel injection system?

Again, uneducated here, just being curious!

i have a Gen 2 4.0, which the manual says use 87 or higher. it also says somthing like, you may hear some knocking of the engine using lower octane like when going up hills, but it's normal (or use a higher octane fuel) - let me go find it in my manual.. i'll bet the Gen 3 books say something similar

I put on a lot of miles a week. Sometimes up to 2-3 fill ups per week. So I did find the the ethanol free allows me to get 2-3 mpg more. I average about 360 miles per tank and with the ethanol free I can get up to 400. After doing the math (ethanol free is 60 cents higher per gallon in SC) I am not saving any money. It may be better for the engine long term but for now I’ll stick to regular 87. If I catch the ethanol free at a lower price I will use that when I can.

Nope, dont do it in fuel injected vehicles. It contains lead and your fawk up injectors real quick. I do run a little 113 octane in a carberatored toy from time to time.https://youtu.be/Pkp5qwslwxc
