I miss easy dry storage as I've moved from from an extended cab Ranger; however, a toolbox pretty much takes care of my needs and I love the looks and maneuverability of this thing.

Also, it helps that I don't have to lug around chillins.

Thanks for all of the thoughts and suggestions. Sounds like people are in more favor of the XCAB. I'm still undecided, though. There are pro's and con's of both. I like the short wheel base and more "simple" look of the single cab. Even the no rear seats is pro for me. Because if I got an XCAB, there is a slight chance that I'd have to ride in the back one day (even though it's MY truck!). i.e. wife drives, and the other passenger claims they get car sick in the back. But at the same time, I'd love that cargo space and the ability to lean the seat back. I suppose I could rip out the seats and the seat belts! Although there is still a chance of being stuck back there one day, regardless.

As far as the sedan, I'm keeping it. It gets 40MPG and I need it for the commute. As much as I drive, it makes sense to keep it, as it has already paid for itself 3x over already. Plus, maintenance on two cars is not more expensive. Look at it this way--say you drive 100,000 miles. On one car, that's 100k miles, but with two, you're only at 50k miles each. Basically, you're paying twice as much for maintenance, but also going twice as long on intervals. Another thing: maintenance on a little commuter car is much cheaper than replacing things on a truck. And I like having another car to run to the parts store when doing repairs, because EVERY repair job means 2-3 trips to the store! :D

Anyway, thanks again for the suggestions. I think I'm just going to keep looking at both to see if a clean, well-maintained one pops up, then go from there. Excited to get back into a Tacoma again.

BTW, there is actually a small amount of room behind the seats (mine are bucket)...I can squeeze a number of smaller items right in there (small cooler, tool bag, umbrella, etc.).

Good luck with your search! : )

Thanks, friction. Yeah, my friend's 95 single cab had some space back there. We've put a couple shot guns and shells in the back. Do you know if there is more room behind the seats with bench seats vs. bucket?

Sorry, I don't know. I would assume there is a little more, though, behind the bench as the buckets have an armrest jutting out toward the rear of the cab. It has much needed 8th and 9th cupholders on mine ; )

    LOL, you too?
I got my Extended cab cause I needed more room than the single and don't like the looks of the double(sorry guys). Its perfect for me and I have given rides in the back to smaller humans, like 5'2" and they say its cramped. It's very rare I have more than one passenger so its not a problem.

Single cabs, IMO, are only good for crawler conversions or general wheeling because of their shorter wheelbase.

Other than that, go with the Extracab or DC. You'll be glad you did.

I have 2nd gen regular cab and regret daily that I didnt get access cab. This is my ONLY daily vehicle I use for work. I have toolbox, which is full.

Bench seat sucks, uncomfortable, can't recline it, no center console. Can't fit my whole family there since my 3 year old is in car seat. Car seat is pain in the ass, I have tools which dont fit in the toolbox behind the bench... Every time I have car seat there, I have to take it out to access those tools. Did I mention very little room? When I transport stuff I don't want to put in bed, keep dry, etc, its very hard fitting them into the cab.

AC would be perfect just the extra storage is worth the money, not mentioning bucket seats and center console....

Do yourself a favor and get AC! If you get regular cab you WILL regret it!

Before I bought my truck everyone told me to buy an Access Cab mostly for all the reasons stated....bucket seats, more room, less cramped feel. But in the end bought a Regular Cab and don't regret it. It's a first gen, and while it has a bench the seats aren't too bad....I have heard the 2nd gen bench sucks. Since I am a single guy, can easily fit my stuff in the cab, and for those bigger trips have a drop-in box for the bed to load more if need to.
The maneuverability and places that I can go and fit are great, get 25+ MPG, and can easily do 75-80 mph on I-10 or 40 without a problem.

With that said, I'm only 5' 8" and had to take a co-worker to work with me while his ride is in the shop, he's 6' 4" and he looked like he was stuffed into a locker while in the truck.

    Hope this helps, YMMV. :)

Hitch and wiring, aux back-up light, rear strobe lights, radio and underseat sub.
I saved $2500 by getting a reg cab and putting a cap on it. Put a PopNlock on the tailgate. Everything stays dry, I can sleep in the bed, everything stays secure.
I like manual locks and windows. One less expensive thing to fix when it breaks.

I thought about getting a single cab, after test driving both a single and an access cab though I decided on the access. the extra space is awesome for just having a place to throw your stuff plus you got extra room to scoot your seat back if you're a little taller like me.

I have fit four people in my truck too, though the person behind me was miserable because I don't scoot my seat up :) haha

I'd go with the access cab so there are no regrets in the future

I've had a couple of reg cabs and I loved them both. I built mine primarily for rockcrawling but they worked surprisingly well on longer trails. To me the only downside was the interior space for the stuff that's nice to have in the cab like snacks, jackets, drinks, etc. If you have a passenger there just isn't much room for anything else if you still want to be comfortable. That can be solved somewhat with a shell if you have a sliding rear window on the cab so you can have quick access to some of that from the cab of the truck if you need to.

As for the bench seats, just swap them out. I got some nice Honda Civic buckets for $50 and put them in my 3rd gen truck. 3 of the 4 bolt holes lined up and they were really comfy. That gave me room for a nice center console to carry some of that stuff I wanted in the cab.

If I was still hitting the trails on my own or with just one passenger I would be all over a reg cab again. Here's a couple pics of my past reg cabs.

Ha! I really do love the ease, though, both street parking and in the parking garage at work (those are not designed for long wheelbases!).

Well, I think I've made up my mind to get a single cab. Despite all of your warnings, I think it's just something I have get and experience all of the inconveniences myself. Otherwise, I'd always have that nagging thought in the back of my head, even though I may be perfectly happy with the AC. I was contemplating a newer gen, but with some of the trails around here, I think the narrower body of the 1st gen would be better. My 2002 DC was definitely better than my friend's 2007 DC. (Still regret selling that truck!)

Box Rocket - I see you're in my neck of the woods. Nice trucks. Looks like you've got a killer combo - Tacoma and LC. I love my 100 as well, and hope to add a Taco in the stable.

Cool, hope you are satisfied with it...I wanted a regular cab MT but refused to settle for a bench seat. Buckets are hard to come by, so I set up a Carmax alert with exact specs and patiently waited.

And yeah, look into a good toolbox or cover.

Post pics in here when you select one!

yeah, that's got to be my only complaint about the DC I have, it's kind of a limo.

Wish there was a way to get a better turning radius out of it...

I love my single cab for jumping in it and running to the local hardware store and what not but I drive 50 miles one way to work and sometimes after a hard day of working sun up to sundown I just want to recline my seat back just one notch. It's paid for so I'm keeping it.
