Just blew the axle and manual hub. Tried to back up so i could relieve pressure on that tire and turn but it was wedged on that rock pretty good and didnt want to move. quite surprised i didn't break an inner tie rod with how much play they have after only 3k miles on them.

Apparently I missed this post Mike. That doesn't look like much of a low gear. Was he locked in the front? That's impressive breaking both cvs.

I started possibly considering a crawl box and turbo. Instead of just a blower. The turbo kit is a lot less than a blower kit so I could put the money I save towards the crawl box. But that's a lot of torque being put down to these axles but then again it should be easier keeping a good line and not binding things up.

Well finally some good news for the truck not so much for the WRX.

Since Austin did such an awesome job on our trip report head on over and check it out.

So I'm just going to post some of the better/interesting photos I think I took with my phone.

Random cactus in bloom almost all of the neutral brown and green. It was the only one around so it really popped out with its vibrant color.

It was pretty cool to see the color contrast from being back inside the dark catacomb looking out. It's awesome how the sun paints the rock orange.

    Creepy dog

    Catacomb Spur Camp

This is the grass my dog decided he wanted to eat. I'm not sure exactly what it is but it closely resembles the foxtail I have around my house. The seeds have little burrs and can get hung up in a dogs throat or nasal cavity and lead to infection. The dog continues to eat it because he wants to throw up which I can only imagine eating more makes things worse. It sounded like something was possessed with his hacking/vomiting echoing off the walls. If you decide to camp here with a pooch be warned. Bread helps to grab the seeds so if your mutt eats it give him some bread and try and keep him from eating more.

    Gemini campsite

First time messing around with light painting.

I had a blast on this trip even if I did break stuff. I'm proud of the rig I have built and being able to get out there and live with just what's on the truck is somewhat of a freeing feeling. I'm excited to do some longer expeditions and just enjoy the simple things this world has to show. If my calculations are correct I could go roughly 300 miles on light to moderate terrain with the fuel I carry.

If anyone was interested in the fuel comparison between the 2.7 and 3.4 on this kind of trip I used about a gallon less. My fuel guage always read much lower than @alee891 though.

    My damage total:

    1 cv
    1 hub
2 itrs have play after only 3k miles. Going to CVJ Monday to see what they have to say.

ARB doesn't always lock so it's going to be pulled and sent back to ECGS for warranty I hope. It's also leaking out of the pinion seal likely do to the diff being pressurized by the locker not sealing and compressor just dumping air in there.

Passenger side front axle seal started leaking as well. I can't keep up with all these leaks!

@alee891 Was that climb after your e-locker already crapped out? Your drivers rear was barely spinning. Looked like an open diff.

I thought it was engaged at the time. It was stuck/engaged until we made it back to Moab that night to manually disengage it. The video was mainly me trying to slowly reposition myself in order to back out...until I got pissed and romped it at the end.

    After Kane was we
There was that nice slab rock that I folded my tire on. For a second while you were climbing that it wasn't locked and I think you thought it was. May have been the first sign of the issue

Was it engaged while climbing out of the canyon/shelf road, or at least on that ledge in your video?

After talking with junkyard Jim I may be abandoning the manual hubs after this one blows. He made it sound like when an axle blows it takes the hub with it. While I have no problem breaking axles at $50 a piece, breaking $100 hubs every time isn't worth it.

It doesn't take that long to cut two boots and finagle the axle out of a CV to be drivable again. Though it is messy!

When you made the jump from 4.30 to 4.88 gears, how big of a difference did you notice?

I'm looking for a completely unscientific answer like "it was somewhat better but nothing crazy" or "holyshit it was like a new truck".

My 2.7 with 4.30s and 33s feels very "okay". Just fine on the road, but leaves some to be desired off-road. I also tow a lot. Weighing options. Appreciate any feedback.

So here's some entertainment for you guys. When ever I installed my otrs I had put the left on the right and the right on the left. :spy: this explains why they hit my wheel weights. I can't even remember when I initially installed them. I've got to do the itrs so I'll swap them back to the correct sides.

Started the process of installing SPC UCA's and I'll be glad to never have to press one of those effing upper BJ's out again!!!

Also installing 882s got one kinda sorta in. The other I think I'm going to use the spring compressor at my work and put it together and make life easier.

Well when I did it within a week I added more weight to the truck with the Wildernest so it wasn't as noticeable as I'd hoped. Also being at a high elevation didn't help. Lowest I think I've been since I have installed them is 4500ft and it feels close to stock then. I wish now that I would have gone 5.29 but that is mostly because of offroad. I do occasionally find myself shifting into 4th thinking that I'm in 3rd but I'm really in 5th just because of how the motor sounds if that makes sense. I think at 75 I'm at 3150 rpm fwiw.

To some that up it was somewhat better but nothing crazy.

I honestly think I noticed more power increase from the LCE long tube header but that won't do anything for you off road. Definitely pulls hills better.

The stock uppers are a mother f'er. I actually pressed out the ball through the bottom of the housing and got the housing stuck in the spindle. High on the list of shittiest jobs.

First time I did one I was able to leave it on the truck and hammer it out but needed to press it back in. 2nd time it was on my manual hub spindle before installed and it was a mofo getting it out and a new one back in. And today the driver side had me to the point I wanted to set fire to the truck and watch it burn! Passenger side went easier.

Looks like a pitman arm will pop the SPC bj right out. At least I hope...
