I agree. Maybe in a few years i may look for a regular cab and LT it and make that the go fast rig.

So with the compression a bit low would be a bad idea to through a blower on at 4psi?

I just found out that in 05 06 jeep liberty came with a 2.8l VM Motori diesel. From what I'm seeing it weighs less than 500lbs dry which is about the same as the 5vz. This might be a swap I'd see worth doing. No need to sas if it's that light. Anyone know of anyone who has done this swap? Seems like a perfect candidate for our trucks. I think the new Colorado is running an updated version of this.

I started reading this thread and didn't realize that removing all the plugs effects the compression readings. I did them one at a time so maybe I'm closer to the minimum compression.

Well I'm 99% sure that the noise coming from the valve cover is the scissor gear on the exhaust cam. I had no idea this was under preloaded and when I went to reinstall it the teeth were offset from the other and I thought it was odd but everything lined up when I installed it. Here is a link on the gear.

Did you retest compression? Where's this thing at?

Not yet I've been driving it around though and it's doing fine. Hoping to check again some evening soon and try to isolate where the leak is with a leak down test. The most recent leak down I did was 15%-20% on all the cylinders which was in the green on the guage I have. I really wasn't paying attention to where the leaks were coming from at that point. I just assumed green was good ha. So hindsight being 20 20 I shouldn't have wasted my time on a leak down test until after I had done a compression test. Then I would have known to pay more attention to where the leaks are. O well, I'm learning a lot about motors doing all this.

I think I'm going to get the rebuilt 3rz assuming the compression is fine and swap that in so I have minimal downtime. Then rebuild my current one and likely over bore it for a little more giddy up. I understand what you guys are saying that it'll still run for awhile longer but being at 8000 plus feet 90% of the time I want all the power I can get out of this thing and know that it's not going to fail at the worst possible time. The only time I see 5th is on a downhill.

Not truck related but I found out that the wastegate on the car has been open a bit since I've had it. Very little turbo lag now and a lot more fun to drive! Seems to have given a little more low end back too!

Took the Nest off. Hoping to be bringing home a motor Sunday evening. I think I gained 2" of height without that tank on there. Excited to see how it effects power.

Deal with the rebuild 3rz fell through. Sounds like the guy is selling the whole truck to a friend. So back to the drawing board.

All options are still pretty much on the table. Complete rebuild likely being the cheapest. Going to give cxracing a call and pick their brains on the LS swap tomorrow.

Without the topper on, the truck has that nimbly bimbly feeling it had when close to stock. I kind of like it. I'm going to try and rig something permanent in the garage to make it super easy to take on and off.

Reminded myself why I hate mud again Sunday evening. I was up to the door in the slopiest mud I've experienced. It was like pudding. No puddle of water just a mushy hole of mud. Unfortunately I don't have any pics but I definitely brought home a couple hundred pounds of it. Took 3 hours to pressure wash most of it off. You can see the line on the door.

After I pressure washed it I used a hole can of seafoam in the intake. I used a 3rd at a time, let it sit for 15 minutes, then go for a shirt drive. This helped me find my exhaust leak that I thought I had but couldn't feel at idle. Right at the back of the header and I think the egr a bit too.

    20170807_144201 by Ryan Heintzelman - Flickr2BBcode

Did another compression check to see if the seafoam made any difference and what do ya know it did. Cylinder 1 is now 120psi, the rest stayed the same.

Tomorrow I'll do a leak down test to see if I can narrow in on where I'm losing pressure. Also I'll add the preload back to the scissor gear and replace the header gasket.

I've always had issues with leaks at the EGR pipe on the LCE header. It seems like the flanges don't meet up very well. I ended up using some ultra copper rtv on the gasket and that got it to stop leaking.

I've had the same issue where it meets the exhaust pipe before the cat. I put a little bit of that rtv on the stock gasket and it will at least last longer than 500 miles.

You won't be trying to swap motors before RT will you?

I'm surprised I haven't found a leak there yet. The gasket I got at the parts store was a size to small so I ended up reusing the old one and I haven't gotten around to replacing it yet.

If it was another 3rz I probably would. If I determine today that my valves are where my leaks are I'll probably try and fix that in September.

I did call cxracing yesterday and they haven't had anyone try to fit there kit in a 4x4. The collector from the header is 3" in diameter. I haven't measured the distance between the driveshaft and trans on mine but it's close to that. I'd imagine the r150 trans is a bit bigger but I really don't know.

Added the preload back into the cam gear today. It was somewhat of a pita to do by myself and with limited tools but I got it. Fixed the exhaust leaks too and it's as quite as ever.

    20170808_152156 by Ryan Heintzelman - Flickr2BBcode

Did a leak down test on cylinder 1 and could hear air coming from the cylinder. Poored some oil into the cylinder and did a compression test and hit 150psi. Did the same for cylinder 2 and got the same results. So it looks like I'll be doing a master rebuild at some point. Going to check it again before I leave for the Morrison Jeep Trail at the end of the month then check it after. If it's not changing I'll wait until winter to do it. If it is I'll hopefully be able to get it all done in September and be ready for RT in October.

Roommate found this lovely custom camber bolt in the wrx he picked up a few weeks ago.
