I voted on that poll that my rear diff was bad. I don't even own a 3rd gen. I wouldn't exactly call the results accurate.

Ok so give a 10% margin of error for shit stirrers like yourself. We're still at over a 3rd of the owners here. Shit even if 20% have the problem it's pretty damn significant.

Meh. Just making my point that he's basing his argument on an internet poll open for anyone to vote on. I'm sure I'm not the only one who clicked that button falsely.

I'm just saying, there is video proof in the thread that I posted of my howl on both my original differential and the brand new one Toyota replaced it with. Both times confirmed to be coming from the rear differential, and not tire related, by the shop foreman.

I'm not trying to stir any shit but it's just a fact. I've posted the videos and toyota's responses for others to make their own judgements on as well.

But seriously if it isn't at least a widespread issue what are the chances that my old diff and the BRAND NEW one that replaced it (when the '17 model years were in production) would both howl. Could be the diff itself or a combination of the driveline, I'm not sure, I'm not an automotive engineer, but I am almost positive it is a design (or at bare minimum a manufacturing) flaw.

Is the sound the differential or a bad bearing?

I watched those videos and my truck isn't make those kind of noises. I get tire noises and when I hit a bump/pot hole due to the shitty roads here in West Virginia a little vibration.

I think the rear differential on mine is okay.
    Hope I didn't jinx myself.:fingerscrossed:
Is the rear differential issue going make you cancel the order on your 3rd gen Tacoma shakerhood?

Yes that just proves my point. Even if the diff is making a little noise does not mean its going to tear up.

How many people have heard tire noise and voted that they had a bad diff?

Probably very few unless they have mud tires but even that would not explain the noise happening when you take your foot off the gas around 55 MPH.

6000 miles so far, no issues so far. Hope it stays that way. I also own a 95 jeep wrangler with 200,000 miles that CR reviewed as worse than average. Still running strong 22 years later with no major issues, just normal routine maintenance and rust through in spots.

Some guys claim that the rear on their trucks do not howl, so if that is true then the howling cannot be a normal characteristic

Yes I believe the Howling is pretty much isolated to the Off Roads, although it could be in others too.

Surprised to hear so many people with multiple toys. My 89 simply will not die and I cannot justify a new one. Your complaints about the Tacomas got me worried though. Had it for 25 years, lifted and regeared for 15. No issues beyond minor maintenance.

I rolled into my local dealer yesterday with the wife, just to see what was sitting around. They have a '17 TRD Sport grey x-cab V6, with a manual. They don't order manuals here so this is weird. I had just been day-dreaming about a new version of my '97 but with a stick and there it was. Coincidence? Then I read all this reliability crap and lose my wood for a new rig. So I tell myself the perfect truck would be an OR not a Sport and that helps.
