Just because something is unreliable doesn't mean it can take be fixed and put on the road

I see tons of BMW and Benz more than Toyota in la doesn't mean they are more reliable

    :)

The only 2 issues that 17s do not have that 16s did that l am aware of is the CPS and the water leaks thru the 3rd brake light assembly. They do not seem to have taken the rear diff issues seriously.

I guess the rear diff isn't something they can fix and mass produce in a short period.
why haven't they recalled the rear differential if so many trucks had to be replaced?

I know a few have had rear diff problems but I wonder how many people after listening to others complain think they have a rear diff problem when all they might be hearing is tire harmonic on different type road surfaces.

Seems to be plenty all over the Net and YouTube of howling rears, not just a few guys on TW, I drove a Brand New 17 right off the lot and it was howling, I would guess it is a pretty widespread problem.

Mine makes a howling sound in the rear but I heard it's normal for TRD off road models with the way the suspension is set up and the terrain tires on the truck.

That howling is probably not the tires unless you put something else on and they would pretty much make the noise at all speeds versus what is happening in these trucks.

Plenty of people don't have the howling as well. Seems to be a coin toss

If the 3rd gen tacomas are using the same on body frame as the 2nd gen should the differentials be reliable and not making any howling sounds.

Apparently the frame and differentials are made of different materials if this issue did not occur with the 2nd gen frames and differentials.

I think the Rear Diff Howling is limited to the new 8.75 Rear but I could be wrong. I have owned 2 2nd Gens and the rears never made any noise.

This couldn't be a more meaningless statement. Sales numbers for an entire truck line vs the Tacoma have nothing to do with reliability.

Thats funny cause I see so many guys who work as gardeners with old 1st gen Toyotas.

9/10 times they are carrying a huge load of cut down tress and the squat makes me cringe.

Quit spouting when you have no clue. Just because you replaced one does not make all rear diff bad.

I'm at 15k miles and no problems. The TRD off road suspension felt a little spongy, but I'm upgrading anyways.

Depends what you mean by 'reliability'. I've had no issues that put me in the dealership beyond the TSBs/service intervals. The truck has not let me down mechanically. I expected the TSBs when I bought a new model year truck. My buddy has one and he's had the same experience. I would not hesitate to drive coast to coast in this vehicle. Quite frankly I've never owned a vehicle that I liked as much as I like this truck. I've got 20k miles on it.

No but according to the local poll, about half of them could be bad and maybe more. Dozens here have had their rear end replaced. Also don't discount the fanboy factor as it might relate to denial. Given those numbers, reliability maybe taking a hit 4 or 5 years down the road. As someone else said earlier, reliability today really means nothing as the truck has only been out for two years. The "projections" on the new gen based on previous gens have not yet been proven.
