I have never bought an extended warranty since I was able to buy new vehicles. Between mine, my wifes and buying for both my kids I calculate I have saved around $30K by not buying the warranty. So, I need one to really crap out before I go into the hole!

There’s a lot of issues with the Prius. I don’t see the earliest Prius models any more on the road, usually because the battery goes bad. And replacing those are a nightmare. I had one that a dealer replaced but failed to properly ground it destroy the harness and computer. One of the reasons why I avoided getting it.

Yeah that's probably the component I'm most concerned about in my 2020 SR5. Love having CarPlay, but there's a lot of tech in that head unit. As it stands my truck is just a baby with 27k on it. No problems yet *knocks wood*.

I'm curious on your Prius. What was the rough cost comparison having the dealer fix versus your eBay find?

Completely agree with you and for a lot of issues. You have to find a specialty shop that only works on hybrids which is a pain in the ass. Not to mention you get an older one and they steal the cat. You could potentially have your vehicle declared a total loss, because those things cost over a grand. Not so much a reliability factor but having a vehicle like that could be totaled because of a cat. The risk factor is too high.

Electronics and mechanical issues are last on the list of concerns with this truck. If I wanted to worry I would have bought a domestic.

If anything I worry about frame rust and the yearly FF application.

I'm stunned that we don't see more 25 year old cars on the road too.

Every time one of my kids turned 16 I bought them a beater it was either a high mileage Honda or Toyota as I knew neither would leave them stranded. Yes my 3rd gen is more complex but I never worry about it failing

Never had any other prius issues yet. Just made an appointment to have the brakes serviced for the first time at over 90k miles. Been an excellent car otherwise. As far as the changing the oil, theres a procedure disconnecting, and grounding the battery first before its done...The NAPA garage where i have it done explained it to me whats involved.

I have a 2.7 and the 5 spd. Pretty much a proven combination. Of course, the super geniuses at Toyota decided to shit can it and 2017 was the last year available.

Everything is reliable. Until it becomes unreliable.

I would hang onto that one, sucks that they cancelled it after 2017.

I figured they all got totaled out after having their cats stolen.

If 3rd gens we're going to have any major problems they would already be noticed. The complaints are mostly people who had different expectations than the engineers. The trucks are fine. They're Toyota's, not Dodge

Customer expectations - customers have to drive their trucks. Engineers don’t unless they are also a customer.

I think another reason for some dis-satisfied 3RD Gen Owners is they made compromises when they bought their trucks which they now regret or they weren't realistic about what their needs were and just flat-out bought the wrong truck.

Dig the 1st Gen, super dig the 2nd Gen. tried and tried to get “used to” the 3rd Gen, but could not. The simplicity and torque curve (and drivability) are why I would only buy a 2nd Gen if looking for another Taco. I do miss the 18mpg and better LBJ design, but the 1st Gen Tundra I’ve found to be better in most ways (except turn radius haha).
