The toyota dealer wanted close $3k to replace it. I only paid them to them verify the problem, and give me a cost.

I love my 3rd gen and would hands down buy it again over a 2nd gen.

Remember, this 3.5L existed for a while before being placed in the Tacoma.

A lot of the complaints come from the fact that the truck is part time direct injected which means it makes power at higher RPMs. The truck is also geared for better MPG without sacrificing the stance. I can get 23 MPG at 70 MPH pretty regularly in the summer.

My 3.7L I5 GMC Canyon was faster off the line but my 3.5L Tacoma would run circles around it on the highway and still averages about 2 MPG better.

There are also complaints about shifting. Some people don't notice any issues while others have. Some swear by tuning it. These trucks have 6 gears. As someone who researched the F150 and its 10 speed for several years prior to deciding I didn't need a full size, there was a common theme amongst people who had more gears. More gears = more shifting to maintain the optimal power. These aren't 3 and 4 speed vehicles anymore. Yes the Tacoma shifts more than my last truck did. But my last truck had 3 gears and 1 OD gear. It also ran 22-2300 RPM at 70 MPH. My Tacoma will run around 18-1900 RPM at the same speed. Hell, it'll still only be at 2k at 80 MPH with plenty of power left. The 4.0L makes a bit more torque down low while the 3.5L makes its power around 3500 RPM which alarms people who aren't used to it.

We also have a 4Runner with the 4.0L engine. Both vehicles have been great! But we use the Tacoma far more. We purchased the 4Runner at the end of 2019 and she has around 15000 miles on it. We purchased the Tacoma in April 2020 with 14k miles on it. Today I'll be taking it in for the 50k service.

Just test them both and drive what you like. The 3.5L is different than the 4.0L but that doesn't mean either is bad. Joining a forum is a quick way to convince yourself you need a tune or you purchased a lemon when you'd likely have no complaints otherwise.

My 2019 is the third Tacoma I have owned. My Ford, Chevy and Mopar friends seem to live in the shop. I am happy to help them remember how much in repairs I have spent over the years, which is $00.00.

I'm too poor to buy a cheap truck.

I'm in the same boat if I have to buy a truck it needs to last
I can't afford to lose work for a truck always in the shop or for it to die on me while I'm on a call with my vol. Fire department as a fire police I need a truck that can handle rough weather deep snow and still get me home safe 5o my family.

Funny how everyone is worried about electronics like head units and safety sense crap. Neither of those things are important in reliability.

True but the safety stuff does help on car insurance rates.

The company i worked at for 25 years ran F150's and they did great . We towed a lot of heavy iron on 2 axle trailers and put 250K miles on them . Some foreman was a 1000 miles a week and they kept on the road .

I’ve got an 05 Duramax with 215,000. It runs great. Half the instrument lights are out, the power seats don’t work, several window motors replaced, A/C has a mind of it’s own, plastic interior pieces are fragile. It pulls great and is nice to have when I need a truck for heavy jobs.

I was a bit surprised this morning while speaking to a friend of mine...he's a long term toyota guy. It was interesting to hear because his son works at a toyota dealership. Toyota claims these new v6 3.5 engines are only engineered to run 200k miles at best before needing replacement. Would of thought it'd be longer.

I'm calling bullshit. I'm not sure how one could engineer that into an engine given how people drive and maintain them is such different ways

The 91’ accord made in Japan was and is Honda’s finest. You’ll still see a shit load on the road. I would say 2nd gen Tacoma’s are proven but it varies year to year. 3rd gen is still to new. I will say the 2016-2017 rough start. 2018 dialed in. 2019-2020 changed a few things and had new issues. So 3rd gen 2018 seems to be the sweet year for now. Never buy a first year next gen. Always wait till year 2-3 to get the bugs out. Of course nothing beats oils changes , good gas a d clean filters

The 90-93 Accord was the peak of Honda quality, everything since has been a race to the bottom for the Accord

Most shit people who work at dealerships say is nonsense... from the salesman, to the finance guy, to the service writer, to the manager. As if Toyota corporate put a memo to all the dealership employees... “Hey, just wanted to let everyone know that we engineered the 3.5 to only go 200K miles.”

Had a '91 4 cyl EX 5 speed couple. Transmission so butter smooth it practically shifted gears it self. Honda had it dialed in those days. Should have kept it as my 'Sunday' car.

I also had a 91 Accord coupe, in 2012 I hopped in it and drove it half way across the country and it had over 200k for miles at the time.
