Looking for some opinions. Just getting started with reloading but I know for sure its something I'm going to stick with. I will primarily be reloading 9mm with maybe some 7.62x39 and 5.56 later on. Should I get a rcbs single stage or spend the extra cash on a dillon 550?

I have both, but if you can get the dillon do it! Will save you a ton of time loading hand gun! Single stange is good to have for odd jobs you may need to do!

I'm going to start with Single Stage from talking with @3378jakesr5 (just waiting on a good sale), but I'm strictly rifle ammo at this time.

wouldn't hurt to start with a single stage so you get a good foundation on how to set up each die.

honestly both are good! both have the no B.S warranty. I say for production stand point 650 as the case feeder and options for it can really turn out rounds if you shoot a lot. the case feeder on the 650 works better than the 550! plus you get an extra station if you want to run a bullet feeder! :playball:

550 is a work horse. more manual which lets you control things a bit more. if I get another one will be a 650 or 1050 most likely the 1050. hell why not get one of each lol. once you drink the blue Kool-Aid you never go back! :stirthepot:

Still doing just fine with the single stage thank you very much...Although the quicker production would be nice...

Any good places to look to buy used? Seems like especially single stages would be perfectly fine used

I've had great luck at garage sales honestly. Lots of people get rid of dies and old presses that way up by me. Also keep an eye out for estate sales. If you're looking to do it in a hurry I will defer to others on where to acquire used.

On another note if you keep an eye on MidwayUSA they tend to have sales on the single stage kits a couple times every year.

I think I'm leaning towards the Hornady lock & load press now. Those quick change bushings are pretty sweet.

Dillion have tool heads slide in slide out! Same concept just one piece vs one bushing for each die both work well personal preference. Friend bought one i wasn't impressed it had problems ejecting finish rounds kept jaming in the shell plate. What i remmber he bought his during a redesign. I belive that has been fixed.

Ill add that i am not impressed at all with rcbs 7 stage. The advancer is a thin bar shaped in an L that rocks back and forth. Been through 6 of them so far. The primer bar is also made from plastic and has a little nub that gets advanced back and forth, if a primer or the bar jams it brakes the pin and then thats dead, the retaining springs to hold the case in the die only applys pressure to the case when at the stage so when its advancing its is loose and tends to rock a bit with the motion of the above L bracket limiting me to only pistol calibers.

Long story short, rcbs's rock chucker is awesome, their customer service is awesome, their progressive missed the mark.

Time for some blue kool aid in this household

I saw that too but my main intention is just 9mm right now so a full quick swap caliber change isn't a huge selling point right now.

Outside of warranty and customer support is there really much difference in single stages? Would I really be better off buying rcbs with the bushing adapter vs just getting the hornady press? I'd love to get a dillon but I don't know if I can justify the cost difference right now
