Well that would come down to who was doing the reloading/retreading. Anyone willing to put in the time can make superior ammo to any factory loaded stuff.

no sir! i shoot skeet and trap every weekend. The price to reload them rather buy them from a chain store ( walmart, gander mountain, and fin feather and fur) is a lot cheaper. lead is threw the roof and so is powder. At walmart i can get a box of shells for 4 bucks a box. Grant it its the cheapest stuff on earth but for shooting around every weekend there is no point on getting high quality shells. If i go to a shoot ill buy AA rounds and shoot those. The only other advantage is you can change everything to your liking as in wads, amount of powder, and amount of shot. But thats getting crazy and usualy end up speding more than going to walmart and buy a case of them

Lead itself is over $2000/ton. If you have the means it is rewarding, but like you said, shooting every wknd and satisfied with a bought load, it makes no sense to reload.

Anyone ever consider recovering spent lead from backstops at local ranges and melting it into ingots? With all safety precautions considered. Would ranges allow it?

What do you load in the 44 mag? I've put 23.6 gr of Lil'Gun behind a 240 gr XTP and 28 gr behind a 200 gr XTP. The 28 gr load behind the 200 gr bullit has quite the muzzle blast. I have yet to shoot the 240 gr. I want to try some loads using Unique.

I figured I am saving about 25 cents/round for reloading 44 Mag. I reload 6mm Rem for groundhogs and long range target with a 55 gr Nosler ballistic tip, pushing 3800 FPS

Same gun here. Lil'gun and H110 are very close. I would imagine the 300 gr HP had quite some recoil, especially behind 19 gr of H110.

    • Yes, I load for 38 spl, 45 ACP, 223 Rem, 300 BLK, 308 Win, 32-20 WCF
    • I don't load for my guns on 25 ACP, 9mm Luger, or 12 Ga
    • I don't cast. Whole different ballgame.
    • I can't imagine reloading and not owning a chronograph. They're vital to working up loads.

I do not own a chrony. I don't see it as an essential part to the equation. If you are working the limits of a load, sure, but for middle of the road or even upper end of published/proven loads, no so much. I feel its more important to watch for pressure signs on casings/primers and know your firearm. Most importantly, work within your abilities.

Just getting started with reloading. 308 and 223. Probably won't save any money, but may be able to shoot more.:D

I don't necessarily reload to save. I do it because I enjoy it and I can get EXACTLY what I want.
