That's similar to the price I got from a dealer here in Vermont, in case anyone is comparing prices for that short block. Whatever the exact difference is (I have the paper quote somewhere) I wouldn't blink at it given what you're already in for by nature of the process.

What I found when you actually go to buy these advertised reman long blocks is that they don’t exist. They’re not in stock.

Call Jasper Engines and ask if they have a 1GRFE, and they’ll tell you they don’t.

The website says they have them. o_O but I would bet that you are correct. Hard to believe anything. I have found over a dozen websites that advertise a remanned 1gr-fe. Most of them don't state a price, and as others have said, these companies might not be reputable

Here's an update- I have attempted to contact a few of these websites with rebuilt engines. I have made ZERO confirmation from any of them on actually having the 1GR-fe...

As for doing it yourself, there's a lot of guys on here who aren't mechanics that successfully put in new head gaskets in their 4.0L. I'll likely eventually need to do the same thing. I'd prefer to keep my original motor since I know it's service history and how it was driven, both of which were very favorable. We're a throw away society but throwing away a perfectly good motor with a leaking hg seems excessive esp when the replacement is going to be a crapshoot and the repair is a fraction of the replacement cost.. I'd prefer to make that bet on my own work and not some unk motor.

That's a press release, not a web store listing. More importantly, it was a press release before covid...

Did you have any issues with your rebuilt heads? I recently overheated my motor and blew both head gaskets. The heads are off of the car and I gotta send them to the machine shop to see if they're warped or not.

Did you end up finding anything reputable and follow through with a reman? Currently stuck in Baja needing one for my 4Runner. Equally confounded by lack of any supplier that seems to have a solid reputation and reviews…

It looks like calling local junkyard and salvage places are the best bet. I even called an insurance guy and told him if one gets totaled call me...

I have two big junk yards near me that actually give you good paperwork and the history of the vehicle and the motor.

Buuuuuut, they want seven to $9,000 for a motor with 150K on it...

I might tear mine apart and replace the head gasket since i have it out right now.

If I had to get a whole replacement motor, I probably would go with a LS swap.

I can get a Chevy 5.3 locally with under 100K on it for less than $1,000. The fanboys have driven the price of this little toyota work truck through the fucking roof.
