Hey guys i just picked up a 96 2WD Single Cab from my grandma and it has a Remco drive shaft disconnect kit installed (model # Remco Toy-13). She had it installed so she could tow it behind the RV but never ended up using it. Anyway, I'm going to be lowering this truck and it's never going to get towed.

So, my question is, does anyone have any experience installing/removing these kits? I want to remove it, but the only thing holding me back is the fact that i'm unsure whether or not I can reuse the driveshaft or if I'll have to find another one to use once the kit is out.

Any info would be appreciated. Thanks.

I had a REMCO drive shaft disconnect kit installed on my 2013 Tacoma and kept the original one removed for eventual re installing. The REMCO shaft would probably not be usable due to measures in the length and sectional divides. Suggest you might find an original one for your truck at the Junk Yard. Good Luck.

    Manual Drive Shaft Disconnect Kit
A senior Toyota Service Manager provided me the information about whether or not a Remco Disconnect Kit is needed for a 4WD Tacoma, standard transmission, versus flat towing with the Transmission in neutral. It turns out that the Transfer Case and transmission has a lube pump that only works with the engine on and lubricates the power shaft main bearing. Trying to flat tow (dinghy) 4 wheels down using a standard transmission in neutral does not work. The drive shaft continues to turn gears in the transmission/transfer case and the lubrication pump is not working. You will lose the main bearing of the power shaft as well as other mechanisms. This is about a $5K replacement cost and will not be covered under warranty. I was advised to always drive with the transfer case switch in 2H, the transmission in neutral and the Remco Shaft Disconnect Kit activated. You cannot flat tow any new 4WD Tacoma without the Remco Disconnect Kit. This explanation was the first time I had a complete discussion on the subject with an expert, and knowing this ahead of time, I would never have assumed that flat towing with a standard transmission and without the Disconnect Kit is doable. Lessons Learned. Frequent maintenance and checking of the Remco Disconnect kit is required for reliable performance.
