It seems the rust is along the welds, right? Some moderate surface stuff. The mechanic on the video I just watched--I included two screen shots--said it is all surface. But is it really?Rust on front steering assembly.jpg

For a 3 year old truck, I think you can find much better condition.

You guys just made me go into the garage and spray 3 cans of fluid film on my frame.

I bought my truck used from West Virginia, a cold weather state.. it has tons of rust under it as expected, but no perforation yet that I can find.

Here's the problem though, I live in Alabama (not a cold weather state). I asked the dealer to do the frame inspection here last time I had it in there, and they kinda blew it off and said it was fine, etc.. but nothing in writing. I wonder if they looked at all.

I have not rec'd a letter yet, and may not since I'm not the original buyer, but do you think I would be covered under the campaign in my circumstance?

I appreciate you guys offering advice on this. The more I look at the videos and the images I screen shot, the more it looks like it sat in salt water up to the rockers after a hurricane. This one is a definite no. You'all just saved me a lot of grief.

Exactly. Like when was the last time you saw a rusty chain link fence? No one is out there applying fluid film to those.

I did the fluid film before first winter, no rust. Going to skip this one. Had my 07 done and it locked in the salt under their undercoat . No thanks....

I understand your statement, but this isn't an undercoat like you think and what they've done previously, and the warranty is 10 years I think as long as it's done. The actual treatment is a fluid film type substance sprayed on the inside of the frame and then plugs installed.

    Looks
I don’t think we’re talking about the same stuff.
It looks like baby snot when you apply it and turns to a clear oily appearance substance after awhile
I can’t see how it would “lock” anything in it doesn’t last long enough for that.
I can tell you from experience it slows rust down.

This is not just a Toyota problem by any means. Having just traded my 2016 Patriot in on a Tacoma, I can tell you that the Patriot's have the exact same problem. There are tons of posts about it on the Patriot forums I used to frequent. Jeep actually had a CS person that posted a lot on the forum that would help people get theirs fixed through the dealerships.

That and I grew up around 4 Runners. My father bought one in 84 and I remember that thing rusting out like crazy. Even back then we always said if Toyota could ever make a body and suspension last without rusting, they would have vehicles purring like kittens for a 100 years. Their motors are dang near bullet proof! He put I think right at 300k on his 84 4 Runner and then another over 300k on his 01.

I just got my 2015 Tacoma back today from having the frame "undercoated with CRC" it doesn't look like they did much of anything. Can someone take a look at my pics and tell me if this is what it's supposed to look like, I can't see where this will protect anything, my 1999 Tacoma rotted out over the rear axle and they didn't even get near that.

Damn, just created a new thread on this before I saw this one. Just took my 2017 in after getting my letter. Suddenly got a call back saying it was ready a few hours later. They told me the 2017 had the CRC already on the frame but that it did not have the plugs installed in the frame holes. Seems odd mine would have got the notice but not need the CRC.

Just got mine back after 4 days. Can't really see much, but apparently it's a frame filling process? Based on what I see I will most likely continue to do the oil undercoating each fall to protect all the other frame components. On another note, they gave me a 2020 Taco for a loaner. Basically the cockpit was the same as the '17 with an updated media center. It also has the adaptive cruise control in the SR5 trim, that works pretty cool.

Just got the work done. The inspection “passed” as there was no “perforations” due to rust. Eg despite visible rust forming everywhere they were not able to put a screwdriver through the frame. An easy out for obvious liability purposes. However, they did squirt mayonnaise around limited parts of the frame, seams and added plugs to certain areas.

I guess I’ll eat the $200 going forward to have the frame sprayed at NH oil undercoating now that I’ve relocated to the area.

Def call around. Some dealerships are purposely delaying the work as they need to hold your vehicle for a few days and the reimbursement for recall from Toyota is not very lucrative for them.

Might have to look into that!! She told me to plan on leaving it for the day which is no biggie but I might call around because I didn’t really want it done in the middle of winter but oh well!
