My best memory is EVERYTHING being closed on Sunday !

One pharmacy called "Liggetts" used to stay open till noon so you could get a paper after church and they sold a (real) half gallon of ice cream for .39 cents.

(We got a flavor called "harlequin": choc, vanilla and strawberry so there would be something for everyone)

Every other store was closed, period.

Walking home from church through two fairly good sized town squares found the street lights blinking yellow in every direction and NO cars were on the road, no need for red lights. just slow down and proceed with caution...

People stayed home on Sundays, you wore different clothes and ate different food off different plates. It was a special day of the week. No neighbor would run a lawn mower or let their frickin' dog bark or kids scream in the yard all day.

Yeah.... I really do pine for a good Sunday.

No Wal-marts in our parts... we had Grant's, Woolworth's, Sears and two other hardware stores who seemed to cater to different clientele, carrying different stock.

I remember when you could buy a new 4x4 truck for less than 10K, gas was around $1.00 a gallon, and got paid $10.00 an hour. Now you pay $30K for a 4x4, $3.00 a gallon, and your lucky to get $20.00 an hour. The up side is we get to pay for a cell phone, cable TV, computers with internet access, and have to prove we don’t do drugs at work. I’m just glad I don’t have $70K in student dept for a $50K job. Free health insurance and a pension,WTF.

We had a "party line" and when you picked up the receiver you had to listen for a couple seconds to hear if anyone was already on the line. One phone, in the kitchen. No-one spent their day on the phone at my house and I probably didn't call out on my own till I was 13 or so except to call my aunt or grandmother to say hello and that was a big deal cause they were "long distance" calls and cost $$ over and above charged by the minute.

When our TV broke, it was broke. There was no new one till there was money in the family budget.

I remember my dad bought a house in mid '70s and interest rate was 16 or 18%.

When I was a kid we had a Bradley's, I remember they sold toys, apparel, there was a jewelry and or electronics counter, along with a refreshment stand. That I know sold soft pretzels, that's the only thing I remember eating from there.

Heh, heh, heh.... a New VW Bug was around $1600 bucks and gas was a quarter !
I don't think my old man ever made over $14K a year but my mother worked too. We did have two cars though, all three of us went to Catholic school ($10 / month) and had a house; the Mtg was $123. / month and everyone was worried if we'd have anything left at the end of the month.....

I remember when there was no McDonalds....When they did finally come around, you could get a burger, fries and a coke FOR UNDER A BUCK...

TV stations shut down just after midnight and came back on early in the AM.

I remember when cops were hero's to kids.

I remember when anyone that made 10K a year was WEALTHY!

I remember when a gallon of fuel was under a buck, premium too. Along with a pack of smokes. You could even get smokes out if a vending machine if you had a pocket full of quarters. The vending machines were always pricey. I didn't drive or smoke, but I could walk into gastation and buy cigarettes no questions asked.
