If this is "old" school, what will we call the empty soup cans at the end of a string?

I was about 35 by the time the boom box became popular. Very modern tech usually with integrated circuits.

I still have a 1940’s car radio with vacuum tubes. I built a radio with 5 vacuum tubes in the 60’s. Wish I still had it.

When I was about 15 there was a RadioShack on Arrowhead Road outside Duluth Minnesota, not far from the Air Force Base where I lived. I used to pick up broken televisions because Air Force families would just toss them out when they moved.

I would take them home and pull all the tubes off and put them in a shoebox full of toilet paper. I’d ride my bicycle over to the RadioShack and test all those tubes and figure out what was wrong.

But then we had to move, and I had several TVs that I had repaired and I ended up selling them for $10 and $12.

In those days you could buy a new 17 inch Magnavox at target for $50.

Sometimes you need to do what they called an alignment on the tube and that was a little tricky. Eventually my dad bought me a used oscilloscope, but I never did get a signal generator, and without that any serious tracing work was difficult.

Eventually I traded that oscilloscope for a Gibson guitar, back when the transistor age took over completely. I still have the guitar and it’s worth a lot more.

Before the Energizer Bunny, there was the Eveready Cat with 9 Lives.

Before Kermit and Piggy: Lambchop and Hush Puppy

Before the Instamatic there was the Land Camera and before that the Brownie

Before Ginger Baker there was Gene Krupa

Before the Fender Stratocaster was the single pickup Broadcaster

Yeah, that Gibson could be worth some money, especially if it was made in Kalamazoo.
