When I first got married, my bride & I had to have her parents co-sign for us --- to buy a $55 TV on credit.
(that was so that we could start building our credit) I had an airline job at $7/hr.

I left the USAF base in Duluth comment in there to keep this truck related. That base was where Amatuzio was flying out of when he developed Amsoil in '68.

He might be before the Eveready Cat, but could also be the same time. ??

I actually only built one official Heathkit.

It was an analog computer that belonged to the school in Hermantown Minnesota.

But my friend built an expensive VTVM, Of which I was rightfully jealous. All I could afford was a little Midland VOM.

No it was because the Electric lines might have been miles away .

I grew up in a house with no electric or indoor plumbing a 60 amp service to the Milk house for the well and lights in the barn

I have no idea if these are still around it was called a metal match back in the sixties for starting fires in a emergency

It might have been magnesium it had a metal striker you rubbed on the main piece .

I got it for a present Christmas.

Me being me I just had to try this out I put this over the paper can in my bed room I don`t recall just what I did butit did indeed work . Flames are shooting a foot above the top of the can.

I open the upstairs window and toss the can out I never saw it again after that day.
