I have gone full circle, back to skating and finally to bicycles. Second childhood stuff.
Anyhow I’m building another bicycle for myself and studying for ideas.

    Hmmmmm….

I had a banana bike in 1971. I wish I still had it. I had the extra tall sissy bar, ape hangers, rear slick and homemade extended forks. Painted it red, white and blue and thought that I was a 12-year-old version of the Easy Rider.

That's the one ! You can put in chili, ham @ eggs, you are limited only by your imagination ! Great for camping too, over the coals !

I still have ours from back then....

ha, hah.... 5 or 6 years earlier, we used to call them "Butterfly Handlebars" !

Mine was a red 24" Columbia 3 speed English racer with chrome fenders that I got for Christmas one year.

I started soupin' it up shortly there after and bought the banana seat with a moderate rise sissy bar and butterfly handlebars with paper route money.... As cool as the tall sissy bar was, It kept me from a quick running push start and throwing my leg over the saddle on the fly... Like the Lone Ranger jumping up on his horse ! ;)

I remember being excited that the rear brake cable and shifter was long enough to reach the bars, but I had to ditch the front 'cause the cable was too short.... BUT Way cooler looking with no front brake....
Most of our stuff came from Turnstyle or Victor Hugo's bike shop :101010:
The old guy there was great and always had some cool decal or something to entice us with for another quarter or a dime...

He would also take the time to show us how to do little things to keep us on the road.... I remember learning how to patch a tube there and of course, buying the tire patch kit from him for another .45 cents ! HA ! What a salesman.....

That thing was cool. It handled like a dream and went like hell..... not many kids could catch me with those racer gears pedaling their little 20" store bought sting-rays.... with the goofy shifter on the cross bar that would take out your nutz on the bumps !

I would shift with the flick of a finger without taking my hands from the grips !

Holy chit, I've done a lot already!!
Pie iron, hobo pie maker, not sure of other names. Use them all the time camping. Best with a few cold adult beverages, or not.
