With gas prices so high (over $6/gal here in California) , how many of you remember Gas Wars. When gas stations in certain areas would have price wars where they would try to out do each other with a lower price. Often they would be selling gas below the price they paid per gallon. During gas wars everyone would be out filling their tanks.
Or do you remember stations use to give away free merchandise if you bought so many gallons, like between 5 and 8 gallons. They gave away things like drink glasses, dishes and dinnerware , all kinds of different stuff.
I remember in high school in 1966 I worked part time in a Chevron gas station. Regular gas was .27 cents a gallon and the owner allowed me .02 cents a gallon discount. That’s what he made on a gallon. For 1 dollar I could pick up my date, go to the drive-in and go cruising around afterwards. The whole date was less than $5 - gas for the car, drive-in admittance, and popcorn and cokes. Life was good and affordable.

I’ll just say this, we often did not go cruising after the movie, instead we headed for the Oakland hills (I grew up in Oakland ca.) and watched “submarine “ races.

Back in the day in my youth watching the submarine races was a euphamism for making out (and more) in a car. All the teens knew exactly what it meant.

All those poor seamen had to escape the submarine.

I heard that quite often here in Pa early seventies.

In my youth the first time I heard the term taking a girl to watch submarine races, I was puzzled. Being a little slow and ignorant I said, well how can you do that. Submarines would race underwater and you can’t see them. They enlightened me. After that I became a big fan of taking girls to watch the submarine races. One of my favorite pastimes.

You were to busy with the Cougar stalking.

Had no worries about the seamen getting out.

One from my time was hiding the salami..haha.

Good guess re the cougar haha but nope. I really didn't date much at all until after high school. Wasn't meeting ladies at an all boys high school and the conservative town I grew up in wasn't an option either..even if by some chance one of those girls would have anything to do with the town freak, I'm sure their parents would have called the police. Though my wife and I have an age difference for sure, we met at 41 and 28

Yawl remember the grocery carts with the fold down front? Pull up to the checkout and it folded down and they unloaded and scanned groceries?

I was telling my son about them yesterday.

    That's funny :D
Remember when groceries had little stickers attached by the store? The stickers had the price printed on them, and maybe the store name. Nothing else. And when you got to the checkout counter the cashier would enter the cost of each item into the manual cash register, then add the tax... then you would pay with cash money.... that cash money likely being a silver certificate... that cash money had to be actually backed-up by something... not just printed at the whim of politicians.

Not everything in the grocery store (at least in my neck of the woods) was taxed. Most items weren't. The exceptions were soda (pop), beer, candy / snacks, and anything that is sold as prepared.
