Saw that. Wonder if it works well in the lanterns (I still have one). When we used it, it was just a rock that was put in water. Captured the gas it put out. Wonder if this paste off-gasses as good as or better?
Obviously, it does (somewhat) as that's why the cannon goes boom. I'm just hesitant about the amount of paste required and the longevity of the off-gas to burn steady for illumination (instead of "boom").

Some research on my part is needed...

It's not a paste, It is dry and granular. The big bang cannon had a small scoop built into the detonator for measuring it

Had to wear those in grade school over our dress shoes,
later on when older we used bread bags over our socks in the "snowmobile" boots we wore (rubber bottoms around the feet with nylon uppers that had a zipper & cord cinch around your calf).

(Couldn't edit & paste these photos in my earlier post. Had to create a new post.)

What they looked like in the 1940s:

    What they look like today:

With THICK felt liners & sole inserts, of course.
No zipper as described by @sparkystaco though.

Yes... I had some of those too after the rubber ones. They were a couple inches from bottom of calf. felt liners, draw string and zipper. It was brutal to get "undressed" when I got to school, hands got numb even inside my deer skin mittens.
My rubber ones were olive green with a yellow sole, laces...not buckles. Buckles were lame.
