I have been looking around for a few weeks for the "Remington 870 express super magnum" and i cannot for the life of me find it anywhere for a decent price.

I have been to a few gun shops and found the "Remington Express" for $400-$500, which is way more than is even advertised on the Remington website. Found one used for $375. I saw Bass pro had them for $320 but they are 2 hours from my house and id be burning more gas than i'm saving.

    I have two questions...

I am going to go hunting with a few friends (dove, duck, turkey ect.) and i want something that will do the job.
Will the just the "Remington express" do the job or should i go with the bigger "Remington Super magnum" that shoots the 3.5" shells?

And i found the "Remington Express" at big 5 for $330 which is the best ive seen yet. Is there something wrong with it do you think? Is big 5 firearm quality lower than that of a gun shop?

    Thanks ahead of time! :)

dude go with just the reg express. trust me. i've been hunting 10 years out of 16( but im no redneck:D). personally i have a stoger condor( poor mans over/under:cool:) with a 28" barrell and 3" camber( 2 3/4 shells and 3" shell)and i've nocked ducks over out to 60 yards with rem hypersonic... stuff is absoultly amazing!!!

3.5" shells aren't what they sound like. my buddy's dad have a 870 mag and he shoots balck cloud and he payes 35-40 bucks per box:eek:. and black cloud even isnt that good!!!!and i can nock them down further with rem hypersonic.

and i have even dropped a duck at 50 yards with 2 3/4" 2 shot made by kent( pretty good shell out to 50 yards and they are only 13 bucks for 2 3/4 and 16-18 for 3". if your shooting with in 45/50 yards( at ducks) shot kent.

    hope this helps

oh and one more thing. you have to get the right choke. wrong choke= no ducks/pheasant/trucks/ quail/anything.

    for ducks i use this:

10-20 yards (jump shooting)= improved cylinder

20-35 yards ( calling them in to decoys)=modified

35-55 yards (sky busting:D)= full with hevi metal/rem hypersonic

    for upland game( phesants/qual/bowwhite/chukar)

i have a dog so im usually shooting 15-35 yards

    first shot: improved

    second shot: modified.

being able to have to chokes( over/under shotgun) is good because:

    1) 1st shot is usually close so a wider choke and second shot( if i need it:cool:) is usually further so a tighter choke.

    2) a really fun and light gun

    but it has it's dissivantages:

    1) if your first shot is far then you basically waste the first shell

    2) not the best gun for duck hunting( its too nice of a gun evern though its only a 400 dollar gun)

    hope this helps:thumbsup:

I bought a rem 887 nitro mag 3.5 last year at academy for about $375 and love it. I have two 870s that I have shot for years and they are very good, dependable shotguns. I would buy one new for around 300-350. Maybe check out local pawn shops for a nice used one if you want to try to save $$.

I have been using an 870 magnum (don't know if it is express model, doesn't say it anywhere on the gun) for about 4 years. It only shoots up to 3" shells in this model, I have only shot 3" shells one time for duck, didn't really need them though (calling them in using decoys). I love the gun, but my next gun will be an over/under, probably a browning, shit is nice.

Don't get me wrong the 870 will always be in my collection, love shooting the pump, never have a jam. You will never need 3.5" shells, I have used 2.75" on all upland game, quail, dove, pheasant, and have used modified on 99% of my hunts. I have a full and was supposed to go turkey hunitng this season, but plans fell through.

Anyway, I picked mine up at the gun show, ventura fairgrounds, 4 years ago for $400, with 2 extra chokes (3 total, mod, imp, full), and they changed out the fake wood stock and forend for all black.

You have plenty of time to shop, when are you planning on hunting, season is over, even private ranches are closed.

Oh and don't buy a shotty from Big 5, not the same quality, I have had friends with bad experiences with big 5 shit. Or maybe this is just in Ventura, but there weapons are crap. And generally in CA guns are more expensive. Just find it online and ship it to Uncle Pauls or Blue Line Ammo.

Also, check www.gunbroker.com, good deals are found on this site.

Ok heres the update. I went to a few gun shops today. The Remington 870 i found new for $382+ tax and the $25 dollars.
I also came across a Mossberg 500 series that comes with a pistol grip, 18in barrel, regular butt stock, and 28in barrel with 3 different chokes, all synthetic for $385.
I also came across a used semi auto shot gun for $390 made by barreta im pretty sure.

Is Mossberg that great? I really want the 870, but the 2 barrels and the grips are making me think other wise.

ive shot plenty of mossbergs and they are nice, but i love my 870. mossbergs have the ambi safety on top, right? the 870s safety is more like a rifle if that means anything to you. if you can, shoot both and see which one you like better. i have the super mag set up for turkey hunting. 870 has TONS of aftermarket.

ive got a mossber 500. the pistol grips are useless, and so is the 18 inch barrel. those are pretty much just for home defense. i like the gun, but if its chambered for 3.5 ur gonna hate the stock too

even for home defense the pistol grips suck. most people get something like a spec ops colapsable stock. i shot mine quite a few times with the pistol grip...it just looks cool lol

i dont think the pawn shops around here sell guns haha. Im thinking im going to go with the 870.

I want to get it from big 5 because its $330 compared to a $382, and $400. But i want to support the local gun shops around here. Soo confusing.

It is only a pistol grip, thats a nice gun. The 870 i was looking at only shoots up to 3" shells. Would you recommend 3.5"?

it depends on MUCH more than just the shell size. but 3.5 has more load than 3's. you gotta factor in the barrel length, which choke works best, then you gotta try and pattern it with the choke with varying types of ammo.

mine with the 23" barrel is actually on the short side for hunting, as most prefer a longer barrel. but i shoot with it with a jellhead choke tube and it pattens pretty damn good out to 50 yards. i also try to stick with winchester 4 or 5 size shot, although alot of people are starting to go to hevi-shot 6's. i just cant justify paying 5 bucks a shell for the hevishot tho..
