It WAS working though. If the second starter wire wasn't hooked up it would have never worked.

I'd say it's either the tach setting or like someone else mentioned, the bypass module. They're fairly cheap and easy to replace. If your remote start works with the key inserted into the ignition than that's probably what it is.

    It's usually a process like:
    Turn ignition on
    Press valet button 5 times
Press valet button "X" times for tach setting
Press brake pedal "X" times for setting

Look up the user manual and it will tell you how to do it.

Update: just tried starting it again normally in 25 degree temps.(cold engine) It started, a little hesitant, but it started. I'm just going to go with the cranking duration set on the unit is too short, or its just a piece of crap. Thanks everyone for the valuable info. Hopefully this thread can help other people with this issue. A lot of smart people on this forum.

How many cranks did it take to start at 25 degrees? Seems weird but I would assume that at 10 degrees it would only need an extra crank or two at most right. I have a 2013 and it was 15 degrees by me this AM. It took 3 cranks to turn over just for reference.

Do you have the blower set to the lowest setting? I know the aftermarket setup I had on my last vehicle wouldn't work unless the blower was set to low.

Had a similar issue with my command start . After all kinds of troubleshooting , I replaced the battery and now she starts at 40 below again .
Going back to the tach wire , you need enough cranking amps for the command start module to see your engine turning over quickly .
When its -40 , our engines dont like turning over too quick .
With this said , before I replaced my battery the truck would start by key but not using command start .
All you need is 1 dead or weak cell in the battery and its a no-go with the command start .
Its suprising how many members find out their battery is hooped with a command start . Often enough the battery is only a year or two old .
There are other issue with command starts as mentioned above , but this is how i was able to get mine working again

It took 3 cranks @ 25 Degrees and you can tell the third crank was slightly weaker but it started up. As far as the blower is concerned, I had the heat at medium and the blower at medium also. I also had the headlights set to "ON"

Think you hit it on the head then when you said its the cranking duration . When its warm the truck only needs 2 , and with slightly cold it needs 3.. Send over some cold weather and the truck needs three but the remote system is only sending two. I think thats it. Good luck either way.

From my experience that's likely it. I've had a few remotes installed. When one wouldn't work I was at the dealer and the Service Manager heard me talking to the service check in person. He said just a minute, my genius elec guy is here. He called him and it was fixed in 10 minutes in the parking lot with no cost to me. I asked the guy and he said in cold climates the cranking duration has to be extended a bit.

I am at the place where my remote starter was installed and they are running a tach wire free of charge while I wait. Funny thing is there is another guy here with a 2014 Tacoma with the exact same situation haha

Well, I think they should have done it that way to begin with, but at least it's free. :notsure:

My wife had this issues a few years ago with her remote starter. On cold days or mornings, it wouldn't start.

We brought it down to the installer and I explained it just cranks for under 2 seconds each time and quits (quits cranking after so many attempts).

He doubled or trippled the 'crank time' of the unit and we've never had a problem after that.

I hope that will be an option for you, good luck.

Agreed. I'm not a big fan of tachless mode.
