I had the dealer install a remote start in my 19 OR DCSB. The truck starts fine using the remote but when i open the door the engine shuts off (even if i unlock the doors first with the fob). Called dealer and they said nothing can be done about it, that's just the way it is with push to start vehicles. Sounds like BS to me, I mean, how can that be the way its supposed to work? Completely stupid if so.

It a safety feature so your truck wont run forever and someone cant just jump in and steal it if you forget you turned it on. Thats how it was designed to work.

Most if not all after market alarms will kill the engine if you push the brake if you don't have the key in the ignition. my 14 TRDOR was fine this is why I dint install one on my 17

Seems like common sense that if the driver had the FOB on them that they should be able to get in and drive away without the engine shutting off.

My 2020 does the same. I thought something was wrong at first, because I just traded in a 2017 Honda CR-V with remote start that would stay running even after I opened the doors. It would shut off after about 15 minutes or if I tried to put it in gear without pressing the start button first.

You would think, but we are talking toyota. My wife’s cx9 push to start works that way, get in hit the push to start and drive off.

That won’t do anything other than let you get in without shutting down. As soon as you touch the brake it shuts down.

I know, I have had users try that on the system I sell.

I would have assumed the same thing since my wife’s Subaru doesn’t shutdown. You do have to press the brake and push the start button to be able to shift into gear. I wonder if the 2020s that use Toyota connect app to remote start the truck stay running?

I doubt it is that high. It is how Toyota chooses to design theirs, but I haven't seen any other remote start systems work that way. For example, in Jeeps (which I also own), the vehicles do not shut off when opening the door. The Jeep has an electronic lock on the transmission that prevents you from shifting out of PARK until you hit the Start button (which obviously requires the FOB be nearby). Like the Tacoma, it will auto-shutoff after 10 or 15 minutes. I don't see any reason why Toyota couldn't do something similar, but for whatever reason they've chosen not to.

To me, it looks like my Tacoma lacks any kind of electronic transmission lock, thus the door shut off. It's definitely annoying at times, but I still much prefer having this remote start than not, even with this quirk. Granted I haven't tried every brand out there but almost all vehicles I've tried don't have the "door shutoff" thing. Are there any other modern vehicles like that?

They do not. My 2020 remote start works with the app and the fob, but the door always kills it. Per my comment above, this is simply a design choice in all Toyotas that I've ever had remote start on.

Sadly, the dealer is correct. It's simply how Toyota has designed their remote start systems on their vehicles. OEM works the same way. I agree, it's annoying but I guess that is their "safety feature" instead of dealing with an electronic transmission lock like is on my Jeep (which stays running). :frusty:

Toyota and lexus have the same alarm system. Most of their PTS cars all shut off upon opening the door. Only way to fix that is get a car with a regular key.

Or buy a different brand with remote start. In every other vehicle I've ever seen with remote start the vehicle stays running after opening the door. ;)

Glad I read this thread. Wanted to add it to wifes truck but seems useless if its gonna shut off when you open the door. My 2009 chevy just stick in the key after using remote start and roll out.

If your Tacoma is key it will still run when opened.

I don’t get this mentality. Even if it didn’t shut down when you opened the door you’d still have to push the start button with your foot on the brake. Thats exactly what you do every time you get in the truck without the remote start anyway.

Good point! That’s at least one positive to still having a key.

And for us push button start folks, I definitely still think remote start is worth having, even with the door quirk. It serves its purpose for me which is I like to warm up my truck before heading out. Another start is a minor annoyance, but the feature is still great to have IMO.

True. In my Jeep the vehicle just doesn’t need to restart as it stays running, but you do have to push the start button again. In the Tacoma i suppose the only difference is the engine has to actually restart. Not a huge difference when you break it down that way.
