My plan expired over 2 years ago and my truck still remote starts with the fob.

It might set an engine light and a code.
Apparently the charging system “self adjusted” the charge rate as the battery ages.
If you install a new battery the self check will see the battery changed state “suddenly” and on some cars, it will put you in limp mode.

It’s BS. But that’s the way it is.
I understand the reasoning, but not why it was “needed”.

I don’t look forward to the future of car repairs.
Not sure it will be worth the cost to DIY.
You need a scan tool with a secure gateway pass just to reset things.

If it puts the car in limp mode I'll deal with it but if it just throws some codes then I don't care.

The service engine soon light has been on for quite some time; O2 sensors by the cat. Car runs fine, same MPG so I have zero interest in fixing it.

I miss my 97 328is - none of this nonsense!

You sound a lot like me.
My TPMS light has been on for years. I didn't even bother to replace them when I did my tires.
If they look "full" then they can't be low on air, Right?
Seriously though, I check them a few times a year. Or after I think I might have run over something.

The engine light, I would probably check.
And like you, If it's not crucial to engine performance. I'll "get to it eventually". (maybe)
The light in the old 96' Ranger went out years ago. As in, it don't work any more. EVAP code......

I check the tire pressure every month or so on both the car + truck.
I can feel when they are down more than a few PSI so I'm mostly on top of that one.
I catch it way before the TPMS would anyways..

The CEL light - I'll pull the codes and see what is up but if performance/fuel consumption is the same then :notsure:
My old BMW had the CEL light permanently on at some point; cheap aftermarket cats failed and threw O2 codes for the next 100K miles..
When the service engine soon light came on, I knew that was BS but I pulled the codes just in case.

Not crucial and not causing harm then I don't consider it broken and sure as shit ain't gonna fix it!

Is there any consensus on this remote start issue? I am currently looking at 2022 and 2023 Tacomas and either remote start or heated seats are factor in quite heavily in my decision. Is it that if you have keys that CAN remote start the engine, you can use them without the subscription. However, if you don't have the remote start built into the keys you need a subscription to remote start from the app?

    Thanks all, Pete

It seems that the consensus is that the vehicle had to have had the subscription activated at some point (I cancelled it after the free period ended) for the remote start to work with the fob. Both my 21 and my son's 23 TRD OR can both start with the fob. He is still in his free period with the subscription, but the fob starts his as well as via the app.

Thank you for the response @Doc62. So, I guess that leaves me with if I want remote start after the initial subscription, I will need to have it extended in order to continue to have remote start regardless.

Not sure you understood what I was saying. Correct me if I'm wrong. I was saying that is if the truck ever had a subscription plan activated, then it should start with the fob even without the subscription.

I bought a Drone Mobile remote start on my 2016 Taco when I first purchased it new.

It uses either their mobile device app or the OEM key fob. IIRC, it's about $30 for a full year.

There was no Toyota option for remote start back in 2016. Glad to see they have it, but bummed that it's subscription based.

I’ve got a 22 TRD OR with the premium interior (leather trimmed seats, JBL audio, etc).

Remote start with the FOB 100% works for me, my connected services are 100% expired.

it’s relatively finicky, you have to get the timing right. Too fast or too slow and it won’t start, but once you get the timing it’s easy.

its “press press hold”, as people here are saying.

Lots of folks say they’re being deleted so people won’t use the wrong fluids. How do you know it’s for compliance / reduced displacement? The removal of the dipstick and tube must be super minimal. Like CCs, not like liters?

How the f*ck you put a fluid down the dipstick?
Plenty of places for stupid people to put the wrong fluids under the hood - the dipstick is the last place I would think someone would try to pour fluid down..

I did see this as a common google answer though.
I also saw that manufacturers did this because apparently laypeople have no business checking their own fluid levels.
Aka f*ck you/pay me and I'll check that sh*t for you - and pad the dealership bottom line.

I know it is a tiny amount but when I got the car 10yr ago, and was pissed about the no/dipstick, I asked a mechanic friend of mine.
He told me it was the manufacturer not wasting precious displacement on a dipstick - they are tryin to squeeze every last cc they can into making power. Makes sense.

I hang around young people a lot. Cars are mystery boxes to so many of them. Sigh. Okay, sorry OP! Not meaning to derail the thread with nonsense about dipstickery. Back to remote start, that thing kids did to their Civics in 1999 so they could show off in the Del Taco parking lot on Thursday nights.

Once my initial subscription expired, I elected to pay for the remote start services but only for a few months in the winter where its actually useful ($8/mo). To my surprise, I can still remote start even when my subscription is INACTIVE, but only from the FOB.

The benefit from the app is range is unlimited, with FOB remote start being line of sight within a 100 feet or so.

I had Remote Subscription plan activated before I drove away from the dealership with my new 2021 Sport...

that should count as activated plan even though it was included service for 1yr, right?

Then, when the free subscription expired, I declined continued service.

Remote Start still works on my truck using FOB.

That seems to be the sequence. Get the free service for a year and not renew it. Then the truck will be able to be remote started from the fob. Just wish it wouldn’t turn off when the doors are unlocked. I have remote start on all my other vehicles and this is the only one to do that. Of course none of the others are Toyotas.
