Remote Start for 2012 Tacos

Hello Gang,

My Taco is less then 140 miles old and when I was at the dealer yesterday I asked about their remote start system and they called Toyota and said it would be unavailable for the next 2 months on the new Tacos. He said the install and labor would be $600. System set up would include the remote start and an alarm system.

Do any of you guys have the remote start up? Is it worth it?

 

For $600 whats the advantage vs just turning a key? My friend has it, he's fat!

 

I don't think it's about being so lazy you can't even turn the key in the ignition. It's just bad ass starting up your truck before you even get to it.

 

I don't have it but if I lived in a COLD climate, I could see the advantage: leave the heat and fan set on HIGH when leaving the truck, and then when time to crank again early morning [?], just walk to the window and crank it! Windsheild will be defrosted, and interior WARM 10 minutes later.

 

My Dad just bought a 2012 4 Runner had the remote start installed. His operates off the buttons installed on the key, which is nice and the cost was $599.00. I have a 2011 Tacoma, I went aftermarket because I had a seperate keyfob from actual key.

I put a pro start in, it ran $329 installed. Not sure what type of keys are on the 12's, but if its the all in one.....then go factory.

 

Go to a trusted Best Buy. Get a Viper 5901. You will be happy. Windows auto open and close plus a lot more neat features. You ditch your old key fob and just use the Viper. I have one and couldn't be happier with it. YMMV.

 

I got my Viper 5901 a few days ago for my 2012. They tried to install the remote start but they didn't have the correct firmware. They tried the 4 runners and it didn't work. They said to expect a month or two for an update.

 

There is going to be a remote start/alarm combo for the 2012? Does someone have a link?

 

What did that set up cost you? If you dont mind sharing. I would love to have the windows be remote but dont feel like paying 700 bucks for it.

 

To be honest with you I dont quite remember what I paid. But I did walk out of there NOT feeling like I was raped.

 

actually i think 700 is pretty dead on for the viper set up at best buy. i think it's 500 for the alarm itself then at least 150 for the install "if you don't require any additional equipment" which is rare but thanks to TW, some members pointed me to these sites that actually sell it for half price and i'm sure you could take it to best buy to install or some other shop you trust.

I have the 5901 also. I love it. I havent set up for the auto windows yet, but plan to. Downfall is the sensor is kinda cruddy. I can jump on my truck all day with the alarm set and it wont go off. Loud as shit when you open the door with it set though........ Adjustments can be made though.

 

Viper 5901 Sensitivity can be adjusted. I have the window module, auto start the tailgate alarmed and I also have the voice module. My guy at Best Buy is very capable,not some young kid at his first job, he as been with Best Buy for 15+ years.

 

That is the key, getting a good installer. Most Best buys aren't. Last time I had one done there (Clifford system on a Chevy S10 that I have since traded on my Tacoma in 2009) I ended up having to rip the system out myself after it started powering up the brake lights and draining the truck battery while parked with the engine off. That was bad enough but luckily it wasn't something even worse. I did my own install on the Tacoma to avoid a repeat.

Ideally the installer should have done one or 2 examples of your vehicle type before. Would also be good to know some other folks that had it done there with good results. Just be careful, I can't understate the potential issues from a bad install.

 

We use a place near my dealership, most remote starters are like $350 and quality install. Btw, if you ever get one that keeps your brake lamps on and kills the battery, most likely they damaged or incorrectly adjusted the brake lamp switch... Usually a very inexpensive part. $700 seems ridiculous to me unless I can get into a defrosted truck with a fresh coffee in my cup holder. Seems way too expensive.

 

Getting a Viper 4103 installed this week. $279 installed. This is remote start and keyless entry, no alarm and only 1 way not 2 way. I can see my truck anywhere I will be remote starting it. Does not include horn honk connection (or connection to factory beep which i want) or dome light supervision. Hoping those are triggered by the wiring tied into factory arm/disarm. The last couple weeks have been colder here in Colorado. 3-4 weeks ago it was in the 60's.

Side note: anyone know where to tap into the Beeper in the cab? Dont really want to run a new wire out the firewall to the beeper on the back side of the radiator. 2011.

 

Not a brake light switch in my case. I guess it could have been a short in the wire that connected the remote start system to the BLS... or perhaps an internal short in the brain. In any case Best Buy washed their hands of it in spite of the supposed "lifetime warranty". Not that I would have trusted them at that point anyway. I'm not saying you can't get a good install and sevice there, they did good on a previous vehicle of mine many years before that. Just saying to ask enough questions to get comfortable.
