I was happily surprised to find out that 3rd gen Tacomas have a remote start function baked into the existing key fob. Press the top button 3 times and hold down on the 4th and wait til she fires up.

Nobody has mentioned this to me, not at the dealership or any other owner friends. Maybe I'm a rare instance or live under a rock, but this was awesome news for me.

If someone else out there doesn't already know about it, here ya go!

Oh, that's great to hear that people already covered this. Yes -- Noob for sure. I'm going to just delete the comment then. No need for clutter. Right?

...I did a search before posting it too. Not sure why I didn't see it. Probably another noob issue, so I'll need to spend a little time learning to navigate this awesome content. Cheers. S

Mine is a 2022 Trail Edition truck. Key start with a remote start fob. Love it and wouldn't change anything. But.........to sort of satisfy a coolness factor, I looked in to getting an OEM smart phone app start feature installed. I know the higher end Tacoma such as the TRD Pro etc..... have this feature. Well, I was unceremoniously turned away by the local dealership saying that there is no OEM smart phone app start feature that can be installed in my truck. I was given the name and address of a third-party outfit that can install a very capable third-party smart phone start set up in my truck.

I was getting ready to splurge and go ahead with it, until one friend after another looked at me as if I had lost my mind, and declared unequivocally that I was displaying signs of reckless senility and foolishness and strongly advised against doing it. So, slightly embarrassed, I have left the $1300.00 that it was going to cost me in the bank and carrying on with my life.

    Thoughts?

The big argument that has been going back and forth was whether or not this was disabled if you don’t pay for the app service. My plan expired at the end of 21 and it still works. The big grump factor seems to be that as soon as you unlock the doors the truck turns off. My Jeep doesn’t do that. In fact today after the storm my jeep was a big ice cube due to the freezing rain that came after the snowstorm. On the Jeep if the temperature outside is low, when you remote start it, it automatically engages the defroster. That was big help in trying to get the ice and snow off. On the Jeep when you get in, you just press the brake pedal and the start button to switch over to regular operation. The vehicle doesn’t shut off.

I don't have a service contract. Or none that I'm aware of unless the dealer managed to slip something in there . Is the keyless remote start something they can actually disable? I have had the truck for a couple of weeks and it worked today. I'm definitely not signed up for anything that I pay for.

I'll keep the group posted if it suddenly stops working.

So it does not work for me... Click 3 times and hold on the 4th... or just hold it down... neither work. I do understand there's a service that could enable this feature, but not paying that cost. I got all excited.. went out in the snow here and tried it out... :rain:

my old 2020 trd offroad with the regular tech package did not have it from factory. It would blink and do the sequence and not start. I ended up purchasing a StartX and added a carlink module. I could start my truck from my phone from anywhere and track it. It also enables the remote start with the 3x fob presses. My old 2023 offroad with advanced tech did have it from factory.

Exactly what I did on my 2020 SR. I can start it from inside my office before going outside in the summer and, it has a GPS location feature. Best part is the truck stays running when the door is opened.

I’ve experienced a couple things recently with remote start. The range of the remote is very limited. Maybe 50 yards. It hardly works through glass. You have to be close or outside when pushing FOB button. Yes, it turning off the truck when you open the door is very stupid. Yesterday pm in 0 degrees i could not start from the office. I had to get less than 50 yards. Then of course it turns of getting in. Then it pitched a fit starting back up. Which i dont like as it can easily get 20 degrees colder than this. And I have a 2023. At home I have to open the steel shed garage door to get it to start from the house. And finally, the phone app start is shit. A) It won’t work if the truck is in a building or steel shed (garage) as the satellite communication is blocked. B) It wont start if your phone is in a building like a big office building. Phone works otherwise but app start will not.

I bought my wife a remote start for her Honda a few years ago. It was only about $350 installed. It works about the same but works very well and includes phone app start that works well. My Chevy and GM remote starts always worked well. Bottom line Toyota cheaped out on remote start or doesn't know how to make them. And that phone app is a joke from most any use IMO.

Thats pretty cool. Unfortunately, I have a 2019 and had to install one on my truck. I love having it as a feature.

What solution is available that does not include subscription fees that still works with current key fob?

It plugs straight into the start x module. It does require to program, but it's very easy.

2021 TRD’s have the remote built in for the fob. The only catch seems to be that the truck had to have the subscription initially to activate it. I let my subscription run out back inNovember 21 andI still can remote start from the fob.
