i've been turning my fob off at night by pressing and holding the lock button until the red light starts flashing, then pressing the unlock button twice quickly. that turns the fob off, so that it's not constantly sending out its signal and draining the little lithium battery. also i saw a video where someone stole a truck by holding up a signal repeater/extender in front of someone's door, it talked to their fob, right inside as most people's are, and the truck started, unlocked, and the thief drove it away. so i'd rather just turn the fob off at night.

anyway, my fingers must have slipped or something last night, because the truck started from my porch. i don't know how it happened, kinda freaked me out at first....sorry, no answers here, but it is possible, apparently.

    Starting over.......
    Hi Everyone -

I just traded my 2017 for a 2023. On the 2023 the FOB 3 press did not work until I payed $9.95 CAD for a month of Connected Services. Right after it was authorized, I could remote start from FOB using the 3 press method or the App.

What I am wondering is if the FOB 3 press method requires that you retain the headunit, it is clear that once you replace headunit the functions from the phone app stop working.

Has anyone replaced their head unit and still remote starting using the FOB 3 press method?

I pulled my Pioneer 7600 out of the 2017 and will put it in the 2023 since it still has larger viewing area and wireless carplay. Just trying to plan ahead to see if I need to consider the remote start again.

The remote start I got works really good and has worked for the past 5 years. Highly recommend, especially if you live in colder climate.

Def one of the biggest gripes I have with my 21 is having to be subscribed to Toyota subscription services and the fact the truck shuts off with remote start when you unlock or open the doors. I can go out and manually start the truck and 10 min later go to leave and the truck doesn’t shut off stupidest thing ever.

I use Remote Start (without subscription) to pre-warm up my truck on cold mornings. (10 minutes then shuts off automatically)

    - The Heating is set to Defrost, 69F and fan speed 2 just as I turned off the engine.

I may have to turn on the side mirror heaters to clear up the frost when I depart...but that's just for a couple of minutes of my drive.

During snow sessions, Remote Start is helpful to defrost the power windows after I do some snow removal.

None of the button combinations I've read about work on my 2023 TRD Off Road. Do I need to enable something?

Did you buy your truck new or used?

I had the app loaded by dealership salesperson with the free 1yr subscription.

I kept the app and chose not to continue subscription.

If you read enough you'll see someone has mentioned a 10yr usage without a subscription imbedded in the Engine CPU.

I'd download the app and see if you could register it yourself.

Used, of course. (I didn't like the 2024s.)

I may try downloading the apps. OTOH, not having the remote start is NDB to me. And thank you.

Remote start and associated Toyota Connected Services started with the 2020 model refresh. 2016 to 2019 don't have it.

My wife's 2023 highlander had it but I wasn't going to let Toyota track our use of the vehicle and sell the information to insurance companies, so we gave it up. Just an all around raw deal. Even if you do let Toyota track you, you will still lose remote start after 10 years unless you pay fo a subscription. F*ck Toyota, they can ram thier remote start trojan up their ass.

This is not an accurate statement. My 2019 OR doesn't have that Connected Service thing but it does have the remote start function that still works after 5 years of ownership. Go figure?

Toyota really crapped the bed with the remote start being connected to a 10 year trial. My wife I are/were life long Toyota buyers, we have had several Tacomas, Tundras, 4Runners, and Rav4's. Wife was due for a new vehicle, normally we'd go to the local Toyota and buy something but since I still had a sour taste in my mouth over this remote start we looked at Honda. Brand new Honda HR-V sitting in the driveway tonight, with a remote start button right on the FOB.
