I recently bought a 2023 SR5 Ice Cap Tacoma: did not come remote start capable, have to purchase to have it added. I tried the key fob remote start sequence just to try it and does not work so, I guess I need an "install." Signed up for the trial services and the APP does not even acknowledge remote start. A couple of concerns:

    1. Will buying the install from Toyota give me unlimited access to the remote start feature on the FOB. ( I could care less about using the app and paying for subscription services)

    2. Upon opening the door the car shuts off, this does not seem ideal, Is this totally annoying for all of you that have to go through this, If I am paying for remote start I'd like it to work the way I want it to, would you go after market remote start instead?

    3. Is the "beeps" for the FOB/ lock/unlock/ remote start programable to be silent (no beeps) but blinking the lights is fine.

    4. Should my NEW 2023 Tacoma regardless of trim level have had remote start installed, I recall reading it was going to be standard?

    5. Reading up about remote start, having to need a subscription I believe this is for the APP to function for starting Only, is this correct?

    Thank you

    1. I’ve only had my truck for 2 months so I still have the subscription, but I’ve read the remote has nothing to do with the app subscription. Also I’ve never used remote start on the app just to check if doors are locked and how much gas I have before I go back to work.

    2. At first I would get bothered that the car would turn off when I opened the door but I got over it. I have a VW atlas and in order for the remote start to stay on I have to push the brake and press the push start so it’s kind of the same thing still have to turn the button.

    3. I’m not sure it beeps I think the lights just flash but I could be wrong. If so then it’s probably not that loud that I can notice the beeps.

Fyi, no remote start factory or market will allow you to enter without it shutting off. No one has figured this out, Toyota safety/anti theft. Your least expensive route is aftermarket, either N2 design or 12Volt solutions. Both work great.

Are you referring specifically to push button start?

If not, I have the Start-X in my 2020 with the H key and it stays running when the door is opened. Only turns off if I don't put the key in the ignition and turn to run before pressing the brake pedal.

Even my aftermarket remote shuts down when I open the door. Slight inconvenience.

Love my 2 way~ Long range starter. Can start it at work or at the rink and come out to a warm truck. Also the oem remote works at close range.

You're lucky no factory remote start. I wish mine didn't. Get a "Viper 2 way" aftermarket. Way better range and lets you know if truck is running and how much time left.

Put a N2 on the wife's 4R. She thinks its great.
They have (had) a long range option last time i looked.
Personally the shut off makes it irrelevant in my opinion.

Spoke to someone mentioned there are some that might say the door open shut off can be "bypassed" involves cutting wire/splices and messes with the ability of the Toyota dealer interfacing to perform services.

I also have a 2023 SR5. I contacted the Toyota Brand Engagement Center through their website with my VIN and I was told:

We have researched your Tacoma, and determined it is not equipped with Remote Connect capabilities. As such, you would not be able to utilize remote start or see this option on your home screen in the app.

So I am guessing it only available with higher trim levels or maybe the Technology Package.

The shutting off when you open the door I thought was pretty lame at first but it’s really a mild inconvenience if that. I pay for the app so I can’t say whether or not remote start through the fob works without it but I was under the impression it did. I end up using the app quite a bit for locking my truck at night because I constantly forget to and starting in the am without having to be line of sight. The thing I don’t like about the factory remote start is the 10 minute time limit. It can get real cold up here in New England and 10 minutes isnt enough to warm up the cab when it’s frigid.

Comes with the higher trim levels. My 21 TRD OR has the remote start and it does not have the Technology Package. Not sure about the package if on lower trim levels.

Hugely overblown. It might be an inconvenience for the first couple days, but you'll readily adapt. I generally try to let the head unit fully boot up so there's a little time to get oil moving before I put it in gear. Plenty of time to tap the button to start the truck, put on the seatbelt, get the phone/wallet/miscellaneous items in their proper place for travel, check the mirrors, and then shift to go.

Starting with key fob , opening door & walking away with remote does not stop the engine. While remote start method does.

I will try to drive away with the key not in vehicle next time

The thread I linked above has a plug and play system that doesn't shut down with the door. It's pretty new so not sure there are reviews yet. I have an N2 and it shutting off with the door bothers me more than it should. I still use it but find I use it less than my previous F150 that didn't shutdown.

Ok tried to drive away without the key fob but it being started With the key. I only rolled in drive but did not drive away.

How long can I drive before car shifts off or can I continue to drive?

SR’s and SR5s don’t come with remote start from factory. Believe it is just Limited and TRDs. You will need to get an aftermarket remote start system. N2 is highly recommended here from what I’ve seen - probably what I will get eventually.
