Just got my new 2020 Tacoma today, and discovered this travesty of engineering about an hour ago. Honestly, I don't care how they try to explain it away, (e.g. safety, theft prevention, liability etc.) this flaw completely renders remote start virtually useless. Having to start the vehicle twice every time you want to use it seems not only counter intuitive to the purpose of the remote start feature, but also bad for the motor (or whatever related parts). Other manufacturers like Ford successfully implement remote start without shutting off when the door is open, and you don't hear about people driving off in unattended vehicles, or accidental carbon monoxide deaths due to unintended remote starts. Big thumbs down to Toyota on this. Still, no ragrets.

Hahaha don’t worry buddy you’ll get over it. I agree that’s it’s bullshit but it think about it less than I used to.

Extensive talks about how many revolutions the starter is designed for. Is it an annoying safety feature? Sure. Does it cause premature ware on the engine? Depends how old you think you’re going to live to be. Did Ford successfully avoid this? Yup. Did Toyota? Yes and no, considering it was designed this way on purpose, it works as designed.

Does it render the starter useless? Not by a long shot. Sure beats -10 in the cab when I use it, and my arm only occasionally gets tired restarting it.

lol I guess we should just be happy that our trucks don’t shut off every time you stop at a stop light.

Maybe I'm being over-dramatic about calling it useless. I'm still gonna be mad for at least a few days.

Toyota designed it this way....they probably think that drivers who don't understand why are useless.

I wish they had provided a setting which gave the option, but to call it useless implies that you can only see your own use and not the intended.

Since I'm apparently useless; what's the reason for it? I can't find one legitimate reason for it.

I did not say you were useless. I said someone at Toyota thinks you are.

The idea of using the feature to turn on the truck in the winter while it warms up is what most people use it for. If you try to operate the truck in in Death Valley, the heater is not useful to you, but that does not make it useless.

I mistook what you were saying I think. I thought you were saying why it turns the engine off when you open the door. That's useless and unnecessary.

The whole subject is controversial, and I'm not sure it is practical to incorporate everyone's opinion into the final product.

The feature that turns the engine off when a door is opened, or when someone attempts to change the gear is likely designed to prevent unauthorized access if the vehicle is left unattended.

Now someone can make the argument that the situation does not apply to them, but Toyota would argue that it was developed with consideration of that situation, and they would be correct.

Some of these systems have a shut off, after a period of time. That feature is included to keep someone who parks the vehicle in an attached garage and accidentally starts the vehicle remotely from slowly poisoning their family through the exhaust fumes.

Again, I can understand that someone who parks outside referring to that feature as useless, but just because it has a use that does not apply to everyone does not make it useless.

Completely understand what you're saying. However, my wife drives a Jeep Renegade. It has factory remote start. She can unlock and open the door and the engine continues to run. If she presses the Start/Stop button or she puts her foot on the brake pedal to shift out of Drive is when the engine stops if the fob is NOT present - if the fob is present, the engine never shuts off and she goes on her merry way.

I believe the issue here is why can't Toyota do it same way other manufacturers do it?

My F150 was the same. It bothers me more than it should that it turns off when you open the door.

Great feature. Terrible implementation by Toyota.
