I've searched the forum and read through some of the threads. I even stopped at a Viper dealer and talked with them, but between the guy's horrendous accent and his need to up-sell me on everything and refusal to understand that I DON'T need a mile range or more, DON'T need an alarm that talks to the remote, DON'T want to carry a giant remote in my pocket, and DON'T even really care if it's an alarm at all, we seemed to get nowhere and I walked out with a quote for $700 and I'm not even sure for what.

So, the things I DO want:
    • Remote start
    • the ability to roll the windows down, and potentially up, from the key fob
    • a key fob no bigger, or not substantially bigger, than the factory one
    • control over the keyless for the Leer 100XR I'm getting installed this month. I don't mind if it unlocks with the second click, but I'd love it if I could get it to unlock with a dedicated button

Any suggestions as to make/model? The guy at the shop also was telling me I'd need a module for the alarm to talk to the truck, any truth to that?

As usual, I just want something that seems pretty simple but the salesman seems intent on mucking it up.

The problem is what you want is not simple.

The biggest problem wanting to control your windows from a fob.

The rolling up and down of windows is possible. I'm just not sure if you need to buy a separate module for that or not. I know on some cars you don't need a separate module and can just wire the alarm/remote start system to the power wires for the windows. But I'm not sure about Tacomas. This will also depend on the alarm/remote start system you buy; some will have the capability and others won't. I know a Viper 5704 is capable of doing this, I'm just not sure how to make it happen.

Generally speaking, remote start systems without an alarm tend to also lack additional features (such as an auxiliary channel for sending a signal to control the windows). So you might have better luck looking at a system that is both a remote start and an alarm. But that will also increase the cost.

My Viper 5704 came with two remotes: one with a little screen and is probably what you would consider bulky, and another one that is about the same height and width but not nearly as thick. The thinner remote doesn't have a screen and won't do the two-way communication with my truck. Other than that, I think the remotes are about the same. This thinner remote about the same size as the factory remote (at least the factory remote that I have).

As for controlling the lock on your Leer, I don't know for sure. I'm just guessing here, but it sounds like it would work. If its possible, you could have the Leer lock wired to the truck's lock and unlock wires. So essentially, when you press the lock or unlock button on the driver's door it would also control your Leer. Then, have the alarm/remote start system set up so that when you press the unlock button once on the remote it unlocks only the driver's door. But then when you press that button a second time, it unlocks the other doors as well as your Leer. Again, I'm not sure if that would work but it sounds like it would. There could be other ways of doing it using an auxiliary channel, but it probably depends on what type of locking system your Leer has.

Hmm... a module for the alarm to talk to the truck? He may have been talking about an bypass. Most Tacomas (as well as most newer cars) have this system where a little microchip inside the key sends a signal to a receiver in the ignition switch, which allows the vehicle to start. In order to start a vehicle with this system, you not only need a key, but your key also needs a microchip in it. Since remote start systems don't use a keys to start vehicles, a bypass is needed to bypass that system. (see how they cleverly named it?) A bypass is a little "module" that tricks a vehicle into thinking the key with the microchip is in the ignition. So perhaps he was talking about a bypass?

I'd go to a few more places and ask some questions. If you can, talk to an installer and NOT a salesperson. There are some salespeople that definitely know their stuff, but I think you're better off talking to a person that knows the inner workings of this stuff. And I bet an installer would have a pretty good answer about your Leer too.

Learning about this stuff isn't very simple unfortunately. But once the system is installed, they're pretty straightforward.

4 windows up and down - Get 2 DEI 535T modules and any DEI alarm with an aux out option(viper, Clifford, python, etc) One of those modules will do 4 windows in 1 directions or 2 windows in both.

Our trucks require 1 of 2 modules styles
DEI 555UW requires giving up a key
    or
DEI PKALL (2 keys to program but wont lose any)
(truck needs the signal from the chip in the key to turn on features and start the vehicle) BYPASS

As for the leer to lock....a novice installer could do this with an actuator and a relay pack problem is how it would need to be installed. I too would suggest going to a shop and speaking with an installer and get the quote from them. Had I still been doing this stuff I could give you an honest quote but I stopped installing about 5 or so years ago.

From what you want its not going to be cheap...You do need and alarm/remote start that can handle atleast 2 aux commands. For the cost of it id scrap the locking of the leer from the fob as over time it will probably be more of an issue.

I'm not opposed to having the alarm, it's just that the guy I was talking with couldn't get over the fact that, if I don't have to pay for it I'd rather not. If it turns out that the only way to get what I want is to use an alarm system, I have no problem paying for it.

There's a shop close by that claims to do all sorts of hoop-de mods and is supposed to be a Viper dealer/installer so I'm going to go see them. I'm sure they are more used to doing "custom" stuff and hopefully someone there will speaker, and understand, English more clearly.

As for the Leer, the dealer/installer for the topper tells me it works with the factory key fob. I'm assuming that it's like some of the tailgate locks where it gets wired in on the passenger side so that the second click unlocks it. While this would be fine, what I'd really prefer is to have the topper and tailgate lock on a separate solenoid so that I can open just the "trunk" if I want to, or leave the "trunk" locked and only let in passengers.

I found a kit for my Sonata that turned all the window controls to auto up and down having only the driver auto up and down from the factory. It also allowed you to roll down and up all windows using the factory fob. Install was pretty simple and it works well for the most part. Some quirks here and there. I can't recall the brand name but will look it up for you when I get home. I think it was about $160.

Calling on any help from alarm installers: I have had the DEI535T installed for over 2 years now, perfect operation, up until this last week. My windows no longer operate. Initially they got stuck down, after power cycling the vehicle a couple times I was able to get them to roll up, but now I can not get the windows to do anything. Any ideas on what happened? How to remedy it?

I have been through 2 batteries and several jump starts through the years and they continued to operate with perfection. I am going to attempt a re program this weekend however I am unsure what could have gone wrong as there was no dead battery, and just last week I went out wheeling and they worked just fine...

Did they solder the wires or use t-splices?
