Remote Start

N2 uses the Fortin module, the difference between buying from him or fortin is that the module comes programmed for your specific vehicle when you buy from N2, if you buy all your stuff from from fortin you will need the flash link to program the starter module. I bought 3 remote starters, (an evo-all and 2 evo-ones), from N2 before I realized how much I could have saved. If I were to do it all over, I would have bought everything plus the flash link from fortin and saved a considerable amount of money.

That being said, I am still happy with N2 designs and given the cost of their complete remote start for a smart key tacoma ($199 at the time of this post), I would recommend N2 to anyone looking to add a remote start to their taco.

 

In looking at the Fortin site, I'm not sure I understand the difference between the evo-all and the evo-one, and why the evo-one is twice the price (and equal to the N2 price). Each evo also says compatible with T-harness, but doesn't appear to include it, and I couldn't find where on Fortin's site to add the harness; the page for the T-harness has no "buy" option.

As an aside, the start-x remote discussed above, available through Amazon, also uses the Fortin module. The install appears to be identical to the N2 design, but no indication that a cell phone option is available. It's $30 less than the N2, but is that enough to warrant going with an unknown quantity?

 

The one thing about the Amazon start X is if you contact fortin they will tell you he is not authorized as they do not warranty anything from amazon or ebay. Now will you have issues, who knows? Not sure how their customer service is if you need it. Saying that my prices are the best for a pts/cell combo right now.

 

I have no idea my friend the Toyota dealer installed it and it is Toyota's own product the start +. Sorry if that does not help you.

 

Just my unprofessional perspective.

The "ALL" is just your basic system. Designed for Push Button Start vehicles but can be adapted to Key Start systems. T-Harness references' for Push To Start Taco's. And only hard wire install for H-Key Taco's (maybe 3rd party people making harness'???). Compatible with several different remotes and cellular devices.

The "One" is a little more advanced and capable of doing a little more. T-Harness references' for both PTS and KS systems. Compatible with a larger selection of remotes and cellular devices.

I'm guessing this is Fortins way of trying to keep the install on a professional level. If you do a Google Search on the PN# for the correct T-Harness, you should be able to find one from another retailer. I seen one on Amazon. Although, I didn't like the thought of buying the harness from a 3rd party? This may be the only option for DIY.

I've been doing a lot of research lately. Hopefully make a purchase early next year. Personally I'm interested in the iDataLink design. But their website is definitely geared towards the pro's. My 2nd interest is the Compustar systems. They're geared towards the pro's too. But they seem to be a little easier to piece together.

 

Now add the harness, $90 USD and the $60 USD programming software needed (that you'll only use once), time flashing it, time cleaning up/prepping the harnesses, time testing it on an actual Tacoma (no one does this - cue in our friend jeremie..."I do", saved him the post ) and hassle free guides, warranty and support. What are you really saving? Fortin won't sell directly to you, so it DOES come down to price, warranty and support at the end of the day.

 

The way I look at it, supporting N2 is supporting not only a small business, but one who is active in the car/truck community. That, coupled with their support, communication, and the insanely easy installation with great, easy to follow instructions, (granted i already had my dash totally torn apart for the heated seat wiring), to me adds $30 of value Vs. buying off Amazon from a company who is essentially ripping off the business model without the support that N2 provides.

sure you can buy the fortin stuff on amazon, (starter module, t-harness, flash link), and then spend the time getting everything plug & play ready but even then you are looking at $60 for the

$75 evo-all - universal all-in-one CAN bus data interface and transponder immobilizer bypass module

evo-all, $50-60 for a t-harness, and $53 for the flash link, so that totals from $160-175, then you get to take extra time getting the module and harness configured (an hour of time?), and plug it into a $35,000-45,000 truck and hope you did everything right.

or for $25 more skip the bs, install the N2 module and program it to your key in about 15 minutes.

 

I know some folks have mentioned range. Is there a way to amplify/increase the range of the factory key fob if you use the plug n play remote start? Or do you need to end up using an aftermarket receiver with a separate fob?

 

Agree that your not saving much. But knowledge is power. And gaining the knowledge of the product and the satisfaction of the installation is worth quite a bit. And, it may even be possible to share the experience.

 

I force no one to buy, to each his own. I'm content either way, in fact if someone needs help I've supported calls meant for competitors, and forum questions from non-customers.

 

Yes, either Long Range RF kit, or add-on smart module for app based control. Or else hold the fob to the bottom of your chin and gain some extra distance.

 

Thanks brother! I also want to add that the extra $25 also gets you an authorized dealer who can validate your warranty. An Amazon or eBay receipt is no good with the factory. And if the Amazon or eBay seller went on vacation or pulled his listings, got banned from selling on a market place platform or decided to exit the business, how do you get warranty or support then? There is value from buying authorized, and risk from not.

No one else can claim this given the amount we've sold. NO ONE. That's why those links are in my signature, we pride ourselves on this. We strive for it.

 

I'm not "calling you out" on anything here. I'm a professional technician myself. And I completely understand what's going on. Kudos to you for helping others as I also enjoy using my skills to help other too.

 

I just need to warm my car up before climbing up my long, steep driveway in the morning. So I'm not so concerned with distance. I'm looking for a remote starter module that uses the factory key fob, and with a t-connector so no wires need to be spliced. It looks like my best options are:

- Start-X Remote Starter Kit for Toyota Tacoma Push to Start 2016-2019 || 3X Lock to Remote Start (Amazon $170)
or
- 12 Volt Solutions Plug & Play Remote Start Kit ($249)

Any thoughts, comments, suggestions on these? Any others that meet my needs? I read a lot of threads and comments.

My needs are simple, but it seems the solutions are vast. Thanks.

 

Just my opinion

Personally I would steer clear of Start-X and MPC. The cheep prices lead me to believe that they are "Knock-off" products.

The two venders represented here: N2 and (Audio Solutions)? - seem to be using Fortin remote starters and Omega Satellite Modules. Both are good quality and have good representation here.

12V Solutions - I like that they are using (what I consider) a higher end module for remote start (iDataStart I think). But I don't like their price tag for plug and play. You can get a Compustar system "Installed" at BestBuy for about the same price. - And I like Compustar too. Only bad thing about iDataLink and Compustar is that they are Dealer Installed only (if you expect warranty and support after the sale).

I don't like Viper (don't know why - just don't like).

If your into this kinda stuff, the Compustar and iDataLink modules will accept the DroneMobile Satellite Module. I like the DM Sat module because it is compatible with SIRI and ALEXA.

 

12volt Solutions makes a plug and play system that takes literally 5 minutes to install. It was the first mod I did on my '17 and it's worked perfectly ever since...

 

12v uses db3 for the push to start, fortin on key models from what I have seen. Jimmy and I both use fortin and

ascl6 modules, same as what 12v uses.

 

I went with 12V Solutions this week. They had 30% off Black Friday/Cyber Monday sale so that brought the price down to $175. Ordered Monday, arrived Friday, installed Saturday morning in about an hour (took my time). Very simple install and works great. The module plugs are on 1 side so it tucks in the dash vertically between other modules and is snug enough that it does not rattle around or need to be secured with tape or velcro. Very happy with it.

 

So I am assuming that you have a 16-20 Tacoma, push-button start? Did you purchase directly from 12volt.solutions??? This is a great price.
