    Hello All,

Any suggestions for a remote start for a 2020 stick? Also, best place to run wires through the firewall.

    Thanks!

I hope you realize that if you remotely start a 6mt truck while it’s in gear that it will proceed to drive off without you and crash into anything in its path, possibly killing someone, and landing you in prison?

Why can’t somebody make a remote start that senses if the cars in gear and deactivates itself? How hard can it be?

The 6mt does not report what gear, including neutral, it’s in (please correct me if I am wrong). There is however a switch on the clutch that prevents the truck from starting unless the pedal is depressed to the floor. This can be disabled via the clutch start cancel switch.

Most cars don’t directly know what gear they’re in.

They extrapolate that info at speed by comparing the vehicle’s speed to its engine RPM in a lookup table.

If the car isn’t moving, it has no idea what gear it’s in (barring Reverse, obviously).

I’m assuming the automatic transmission reports whether it’s in park, neutral, or drive/s-mode, because things like remote start and 4lo depend on it.

Manual transmissions don’t have a “park” position. Instead it is standard practice to park them in either 1st or reverse gear to prevent them from rolling away. This is not compatible with remote start.

Youre right, automatics do directly know where the PRNDL is, but this is a thread about manuals so I didn’t want to muddy the explanation by also talking about automatics.

Modern automatics are full of sensors and directly know what gear they’re in.

For 4Low, that’s also why stick fourwheelers tell you to put the clutch in, because the manual doesn’t know if you’re in neutral or not, but it knows if you have the clutch depressed.

the practice is to use the parking break...using gears and/or turning wheels to curb used for parking on hills. Im just curious if anyone installed one.

There are plenty of people who have flat places to park and never leave it in gear. I don’t agree with them, but it’s pretty common and those folks will have no issues installing and using a remote start.

That one time they forget they left it in gear though? Well that’ll get you on the news at least. https://www.wxyz.com/news/region/oakland-county/video-remote-start-sends-car-into-pond-in-new-hudson

If you leave your truck in neutral while parked and rely on the parking brake, I think you are in the minority, albeit I’ve never seen a survey.

Personally I leave it in gear 100% of the time and use the e-brake for extra protection on slopes. E-brakes are not always in full working order on old vehicles and that cable could always snap.

The addition of a simple sensor that verifies the car is in neutral is all that is needed. As far as stoping the car from rolling away. Might have to get some wheel chocks or something. I’m not saying that I would park my manual vehicle without it being in gear I’m just saying there’s just one extra step of adding a sensor somewhere and remote start should work fine

There are manufacturers for remote start on a MT. Before you turn the truck off, you have to go through a shut down process that allows the remote start know that the shifter is in neutral and the e-brake is set. If anyone opens a door before the remote start is activated after the shutdown process it won’t start the truck. Compustar is one brand.

N2 designs does a good one for the 6MT. I’ve had it for 6yrs+

It won’t let you start in gear because you have to “set” the remote start in neutral before you leave the truck. The sequence is drive along, park the truck, shift to neutral, pull the hand brake, foot off the foot brake, twist the key too the “off” position and pull it out - but the engine still runs. Then you get out of the truck and when you shut the driver door it locks and the remote start is set. If you open any door it deactivates. Might even deactivate if you just unlock the truck, but I can’t remember. Then just push lock 3 times, slowly, and she starts. Truck is locked the whole time and can’t roll away because you left it in neutral and had the hand brake on.
