I have a 2020 Sport. I was wondering if anyone has removed the factory installed remote start and installed aftermarket (N2) remote start. My key fob no longer works. I believe it’s ridiculous to pay to use my key fob.

I might be wrong but there’s nothing to remove, it’s just programmed into one of the CPU’s. Just add the aftermarket one and rock on. Mine no longer works either and I’m sure as hell not paying a subscription to use my fob.

In case anyone is interested, if you download the Toyota app and activate the free trial of Toyota service connect the oem remote start should work again. The trial in my app says up to 10 years so I should be set for the foreseeable future. I don’t care if Toyota has my data, but I sure as hell won’t pay a subscription for remote start.

Please post back here if it works for you! Good to have more data on this than just my own vehicle. When I activated the trial it took a day to become active, and I think you will have to start the vehicle up for it to take effect. Hopefully this works for you, just in time for the cold season!

Factory remote start works without the subscription. Press the lock button 3 times and hold for 3-5 seconds on the third press and voila.

the remote connect app does alot more than just start the truck for posers, imo it cost money because it uses a cell or satellite signal to work and that has cost for Toyota, i don't like to pay but it has other features that are worth the 8 bucks a month for me

It does not. I think Toyota starts vehicles with something like 3 years for free. My truck just turned 3 and the fob remote start stopped working. I thought it was a low fob battery so I replaced it. Still didn’t work. Then I downloaded the app and activated the free trial of Toyota connect and the very next day the remote start worked again. A lot of people think the fob remote start is unrelated to Toyota connect, but they are tied together. I think it’s a terrible choice but that’s at least how it works on my ‘21 TRD.

It does not always does. I've asked Toyota to stop tracking me and they stopped the 3 button from working.

Mine stopped 1+ month shy of 3 years. I will be getting ND2 remote instead.

I wonder how much personal data they're selling to support that?

Yeah we bought the N2 kit for my wife's Tacoma thinking the remote start would stop working after the first year when her subscription expired. So far it has still been working several months later, never installed the kit.

People here are saying it does stop after about 3 years though? Maybe I'll install the N2 one then...

I bought my 2021 Sport new on May 14th and got the app loaded on my phone by the salesperson.

Had the included subscription for a year and then cancelled auto-renewal.

App is still on my phone and is ready for me to renew at the click of a button.

As a matter of fact, it signed me out and I'm still able to remote start my truck.

We pay for the app on my wifes 2020 4Runner. She typically keeps her vehicles for about 5 years and the math worked out cheaper to pay for the app than have the dealer install an aftermarket remote starter. Yeah, we could have probably gotten one installed elsewhere cheaper but I don’t like the idea of fighting with the dealer if it causes issues, if the dealer installs it, they can fix it.

It will continue to work, as long you allow Toyota to collect your driving information. When you revoke your concent to it, remote starter stops working.
