I have them painted, ready to put back together... Should I try to remove the old adhesive? If so, whats the best method? Pocket knife?

So id have to heat up both sides... I figured if I could remove as much old as possible it would go back together more flush?

just put the two pieces together and set it in the oven again to get it warmed up. Take it out and press them together. I did that twice with each headlight and than after it cooled off, than put the silicon around it also. So far no problems.
