Been running a S&B cai for about a year now. That’s over. I took off my throttlebody last week to clean it, and noticed dirt particles in my intake tube. And my throttlebody was full of soot After cleaning it when I installed the cai. I should have listened to you guys a year ago, Lesson learned. I reinstalled the factory airbox. And now realize that the OEM filter is designed to protect the engine. These cold air intakes are not!

Good. Oiled filters are absolute trash. By the way, stock taco intake is cold air. Its also same intake as in the 5.7L tundra. This mighty 3.5 gets more air that it needs.

I used to run oiled filters (K&N and TRD) but when i discovered a fine layer of dust in my intake tube, that filter went straight into the garbage. Paper OEM only for now.

Now you have to trade it in before the engine blows up sometime between 2045 -2052.

Honestly though, throttle bodies get dirty regardless, the PCV pipe connects to oem as well.

I'm not on the hate train here, CAI gives noise and a washable filter. They only cause issues if over oiled or the hoses come loose.

I had my S and B on for years and my truck would also have a weird hesitation or misfire every once in a while. But I never put 2 and 2 together. I have the cleaned the filter a few times over the years too.

Removed it and found some oil in the connecting tube, basically where the PCV valve connected to it.

Installed a new PCV Valve, oil catch can, and the stock airbox and it has been running much better ever since. I would stay away from aftermarket intakes, not worth the extra noise.

I found it doesn't really matter how little or how much oil is on the filter (I was always careful to not over-oil the one on my last vehicle after I discovered this happening)... Still happens.
K&N (and similar) filter oils are extremely tacky. When dust particles manage to pass through the filter gauze, little spots of oil are left on many of them. These oil spots allow them to stick to everything inside the intake (not to mention, clogging up the O2 sensors after passing through your engine). After switching back to paper filter, I never found more than a light film of dry dust inside the intake.

    It really doesn't.
Oiled cotton gauze filters are trash.
If not initially, sooner than later...

Never once I had issues with MAFs using oiled filters and I ran K&N and TRD for many, many years.

I didn't say anything about a MAF sensor... It too got dirty and I had to clean it several times, although that particular component wasn't damaged. But the engine after having ingested all that dust? Who knows... Fortunately I realized the K&N was shit and gave it up before the engine showed other signs of an issue such as compression loss or oil burning.

But now I'm a bit confused... Up above (post #2) you were (literally) trashing on oiled filters, now you're supporting them?? Which is it?

So you believe the air filter oil doesn’t burn in the combustion cycle, up to 2000*C, passes through the engine, think about that process, then clogs the cat?

    Jeezus... People can't read :goingcrazy:

I didn't say anything about a cat either. (wtf??)

I said O2 sensor (That's OXYGEN SENSOR; it tells the engine ECM how rich or lean the air/fuel mixture is)

Dust most certainly passes through the engine (of course any filter oil on the dust would burn off... Dust itself doesn't burn. Think about that). Over time this dust collects within the openings of the OXYGEN SENSOR until it can no longer function properly (indicating to the ECM what the fuel mixture is). Eventually (based on that inaccurate indication) the ECM hits an adaptive limit, sets a code for too-lean and/or too-rich, triggers the MIL, engine runs like crap/MPG goes in the shitter.

What is so complicated about this? Oiled-gauze filters suck. They let too much dust through (you can almost see through them). They are trash.
