removed wrong drain plug

I won't go into the how I did it but I unscrewed the drain plug in the tranny of my 2012 v 6 tacoma. I probably lost up to a pint of fluid before I put it back in. Can I drive it 8 miles to a garage to have a real mechanic replace the fluid without damaging the transmission. I live 2 1/2 hours from the nearest Toyota dealer, hence my stupid move. I was on my back without jacking up the truck, reaching blindly for the oil drain. There, I said it. I probably only lost a cup of fluid

 

why not just take a different vehicle to a local shop and buy a quart of fluid.

Tow it to a shop that specialist's with a sealed transmisions. From what I read on here you need a special pump for the fluid.

 

I think it has to be Toyota ATF.
Make the two hour drive and pick up the OEM fluid, top off the tranny and your good to go.

 

If you're only down a pint, I wouldn't be afraid to drive it.

Somewhere on here there is a thread on how to refill it properly if you want to do it yourself. There are factory service manuals online at TTORA also.

I would crack open the owner's manual and see what it says for fluid. Chances are good that the local autoparts stores have something that is an equivalent to the factory stuff. These transmissions have been out for awhile now.

^^^^^ Agree completely, I don't see a litre of fluid loss being an issue to slowly drive yourself to a parts store to fill up, I've seen engines run on 1.5 litres of lost fluid, and since they weren't abused in transit the engine held fine.

At the end of the day, it's your call.

You guys are incredibly misinformed and should stop spreading the BS. Anyone with basic mechanical skills and tools can refill the transmission. I can assure you, there is no 'special pump' required.

^^This. It's not difficult. The fill plug is on the passenger side, slightly further back from the drain plug. Put back the same amount you took out and you're good to go.

Completely correct sir. No special pump needed. Just make sure you use the correct fluid. Don't even THINK of putting in the wrong fluid, because I have seen trucks get STUPID with just a couple quarts of the wrong fluid in it. Strange but true.
