I own a 2WD Tacoma and I've got a buddy who owns a 4WD Tacoma - he had his truck towed on a flat bed and when the driver unloaded it, he had the gear selector in drive - and insisted that was OK and normal - my friend assumed it should have been in neutral.

    What's the correct procedure?

    Thanks!

Hydraulic transmissions can't engage gears without the truck running. It's ok bro.

No problem as long as it wasn't in park (pawl engaged). As an aside, once did a push start on an auto Corvair by starting in drive and then dropping into low around 15-20 MPH.
