There has to be a way to put a switch in to energize the locker. There’s a motor that engages the locker, energize that motor and the locker will engage. I haven’t done it that’s what I’d try.

I can’t answer your question, but I can say that, IMHO, drifting in 4wd is more fun than 2wd, but the right awd is even better.

2wd is overly sensitive to over steer and is single dimensional. With 4wd, and especially awd, I have more control. I find it’s easier to start the drift by triggering rear wheel spin and then power out of it with 4 wheel spin.

CAVEAT: My experience is primary on snow/dirt/gravel/mud. I’ve never had enough money to do it on pavement.

    YMMV.

If you have to put the truck on jackstands to see if the front wheels will be driven with no drive shaft....you should find another hobby.

There is not a motor on 3rd gens....it's like an eaton e-locker or an A/C clutch....just an electromagnet but it uses a PWM signal, not a switched 12V

thanks for the various feedback. replying all here. someone wanted to see more pics. the 4wd drift wont work on the currently wet rainy street because my front and rear tires are currently very different sizes. i have small light wheels/tires (american racing outlaw ii 15x8) with 225/60/15 tires for effective lower gearing (yes it racks up more miles on the odo and throws the speedo off, the opposite of oversize tires - makes the taco hella faster). also have custom center exit exhaust with six inch glasspack muffler. the front lift threw the tss off and just a lot of dash lights so obviously i know if i took front driveshaft off 4wd would not engage front axles but unknown how ecu would react going into 4lo w rear locker and then driving like locked 2wd. some suggested rear locker can engage in 2lo but havent been unable to replicate that, or was it 2hi? in any event, would being in 2hi or 2lo be slower than regular 2wd?.. guess will have to put truck on jacks and remove fr driveshaft and turn the buttons to see what happens at the wheels. as for i shoulda gotten a 240 or wrx, theres actually a lot of cross shopping there with taco fans also being turbo/jdm fans. i live in cali so everything is difficult and ive gotten pulled over lots and state reffed before, but since this taco is new it wont need smog chk for five years i think.

someone also asked about the rear binding. yes stock it is soft and hops and binds so i flipped the bottom overload spring and have fox shocks on stiffest setting AND custom mini moto coillovers in between frame and axle to further stiffen the rear and have a half inch travel (ps the minicoilovers broke so now i have the rear strapped and between the flipped overload springs the stiff shocks and limited down travel and light wheels/tires the rear doesnt bind or hop and i get to really practice driver mod skills ;)

lol @ old geezers. them traction bars are for serious power and drag racing not for taco power with passenger car tires. but i really love a harsh ride to me it feels like a massage and racecar feel. my last build was a stanced bmw on 34k springs but the smog and state ref made me have to put her down

you know i looked hella hard at the xrunner but woulda needed to lift it then havta regear it cause i like the xrunner drivetrain but not the look, and lift options were shit and tons of holes if u remove the body lmao.
wish toyota made a third gen prerunner version thats 2wd with rear locker and twin turbo 3.5L. i can mod it eventually that way except the turbos unless i invest in a smog shop ;)

You need to steal a locker that you can manually activate out of another vehicle. Any 4Rs or LCs that have that? If not, I think the MB G63 does... :stirthepot:

Is.... is that a fuggin exhaust through the trailer hitch? 1/2in of down travel and improperly set stiff shocks on a light rear of a truck... you sir are destine to cause a crash with an uncontrollable truck - there are ways to do what you ask but I will absolutely not be part of helping you out to make this truck even more squirly and unsafe for the sake of everyone else on the road.

This is an abomination, of course its here in CA, and of course its close to LA (beverly hills bmw plate cover). Shit like this gives the rest of us here in CA a super bad wrap.

except for the twin turbo part, you can go buy a prerunner TRD Off Road currently. Prerunner is 2WD.

Let us know when mommy and daddy hire a couple "real" drifters to teach you how it works. I'm picturing Malibu's Most Wanted but with drifting instead of rapping.
