I took this series of pictures to assist someone with the removal of the map light cover in my 04 DC. I struggled a bit initially, and didn't find any good references, so just in case someone else is struggling, here is how I managed to get mine off. Insert small screwdriver/knife blade as shown, and pry this small cover loose and remove.

Now pry the edge closest the windshield down. You may have to do this to both sides. Mine was very tight the first time I removed it, but now that I have had it out several times, it comes loose easier.

Here is what remains attached to the roof.

And here are the tabs that hold it in place.

Just installed LED light in my dome. All 3 positions work. On, off, door. But they only work with key in ignition in Acces, or on position. Once I turn the key off, the dome goes off too. Thought someone may have some insight to what is going on with it?

Fox 2.0 Coilovers in the front and Fox 2.0’s in the rear, Total Chaos UCA’s, Al-lpro expo leafs, K&N cold air intake, TRD headers,Magnaflow catback exhaust,URD short throw shifter, switched out my 60/40 bench seat for some Tacoma Limited seats, Replaced the vinyl shift boot for a leather one, completely soundproofed the cab w/ Frost King. Replaced stock radio with a Pioneer AVH series head unit. Focal component system w/a 10" sub powered by 2 Alpine amps. Weathertech floor mats. Line-X'd the bed. SCS Ray 10’s, Installed an A.R.E. MX series camper shell. All-Pro Apex front bumper w/ All-Pro skid plates all the way back to the Trans. Low Range fuel skid plate.
I snatched one of these maplights off of eBay for my 03 Tacoma that didn’t come with a maplight. I guess I need to find a donor Tacoma with a map light to harvest the wire connection, does anyone know if it’s also wired into the dome light?

This just happens to be my 1000th post!

Likely you will need to add a resistor to the dome bulb. That solved all of my issues.

Yes. 10 ohm if memory serves. The integration circuit just needs a tiny bit of resistance.

I added black electrical tape over part of the clear map light lens so the light would only shine downwards and not on my face.

I actually made a video when I was changing my lighting a while back that showed how to do this, at least the best I could with 1 hand on the camera. Here it is if anyone is interested. I make other gen 1 tacoma videos as well so subscribe if you may be interested in following my build! https://www.youtube.com/edit?o=U&video_id=mC6H_2B7GLM
