I've done some searching but haven't found much...I have some rust on my oil pan and want to replace it. What is the best way to remove the pan? It is an 08 4cyl..any advice is much appreciated!

Is it such that you can't do prep and painting in place? Would seem to be much easier........ And it's not like it's a visual thing. So POR15 or some other encapsulator, even with a brush, would work well.

I would leave it in place and just treat it with POR15 but the rust is pretty bad and there is an oil leak which I'm assuming is from the gasket. So I figured just replace it...

I had the same issue on my 98 4 cyl. If I remember you have to drop the differential to remove it. I ended up just cleaning it up and using POR15. Mine wasn't leaking yet though. I haven't really looked at my 2015, but I bet it would be no different.. you have to drop the differential.

Could you possibly lift the motor and sneak the pan out?

I was thinking of loosening the engine mount bolts and jacking the engine up to hopefully make enough room to slide the pan out....stay tuned!

Wait...can't you just drain the oil, remove the bolts around the engine oil pan, pry it open, then replace? IIRC the pan is in a spot that is not being blocked by crossmembers or anything of that sort. But then again, I have never removed an oil pan so I wouldn't know.

I've decided to pull the motor and replace the plan that way. Also it gives me the chance to take care of some rust on the frame with the engine out! Luckily I have my 93 22re 2wd while I'm working on the 08!

I was going to suggest it may be easier to pull the motor.

Nice work on the frame. Don't forget to oil inside the frame. I use a rust proofing gun on my Tacoma.

Thanks! Didn't think to oil the inside of the frame...I'll definitely do that!

Update on engine removal: everything has come apart nicely. Only snag so far are the two rusted/seized exhaust bolts from pipe to manifold and top two transmission bolts.

Heat the exhaust manifold and the bolts should come out. The tranny bolts are probably just vedy tight. Use a good 6 point socket and have at it.

If you don't have a rust proofing gun lots on the forum are using fluid film. A couple of cans should do.

Awesome, thanks...I may pick up a few cans of that! Any stores sell it..or is it an online buy? I'm not too worried about the exhaust bolts even if I have to grind them off. I plan on replacing them regardless. The transmission bolts are just at a very awkward angle and I want to make sure I have a good bite on them (with a six point socket). Thanks again!

Nice write up. The POR-15 does not come off clothing or concrete very well. First hand experience:eek:.

Take some pics and post when you pull the motor.
